Bolts hire second secondary coach
Wednesday, Feb 21, 2007
Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner has structured his staff to include two secondary coaches and has added former Bills and Jets secondary coach Bill Bradley to coach alongside fellow secondary coach Brian Stewart. Bradley signed a two-year contract with the Chargers.
Bradley’s background includes working with Bolts’ defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell as the defensive backs coach in Buffalo from 1998-2000 and with the New York Jets from 2001-03.
In Buffalo, Bradley’s secondary led the NFL in pass defense in 1999, while ranking 14th in 1998 and fourth in 2000. Buffalo made the playoffs following the 1998 and ’99 seasons. Two of Bradley’s three seasons in New York, the Jets ranked in the NFL’s top 10 in pass defense, recording a No. 7 ranking in 2001 and a No. 10 ranking in 2003. The Jets made the playoffs as a Wild Card in 2001 and won AFC East in 2002.
Bradley left the NFL after the 2003 season to return to his native Texas and serve as the defensive coordinator at Baylor University in Waco.
In 2005, Baylor ranked 13th in the nation in pass efficiency defense while going 5-7 on a slate that included tough overtime losses on the road at Texas A&M and Oklahoma.
That year, the Bears’ defense allowed its fewest total yards, rush yards and points per game since 1995.
A native of Palestine, Texas, Bradley was a high school All-America quarterback who led his team to the 1965 state title and went on to a standout collegiate career as a quarterback and defensive back at the University of Texas from 1966-68.
Bradley, who led the NFL in interceptions in both 1971 (11) and 1972 (nine), became the first player ever to lead the league in interceptions in consecutive seasons, a feat that has been matched just one time since.
Bradley still holds Eagle records for career interception return yardage (536) and the club single-season marks for interceptions and return yardage (11 for 249 in 1971), while sharing the team's all-time interception record with Eric Allen (34).
He played in 114 NFL games, spending the 1969-1976 seasons with the Eagles and the 1977 campaign with both the Minnesota Vikings and St. Louis Cardinals.
Bradley is a member of the Texas High School, the University of Texas and the Philadelphia Eagles Halls of Fame. Bill and his wife, Susan, have two children, Matthew and Carissa.
