Sources: Chargers safety Kiel arrested on drug chargesESPN.com news services

San Diego Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was arrested Tuesday on drug-related charges, law enforcement sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Kiel was charged with possession, possession for sale, and transportation of a controlled substance, sources told ESPN.

The law enforcement sources said several plain clothes DEA agents appeared at the Chargers' facility Tuesday morning with an arrest warrant, searched his locker and car, and took Kiel away.

The Chargers, who are coming off a bye week, were on the practice field at the time.

In a statement, team spokesman Bill Johnston said: "We're aware of an off-the-field situation involving Terrence Kiel and we're monitoring the situation. Due to the personal nature of the ongoing legal investigation, the Chargers are withholding further comment until the matter is resolved legally."

Kiel was booked and released after posting $150,000 bond.

Chargers officials were not returning phone calls Tuesday night. Kiel and his agent also could not be reached for comment.

Kiel, a fourth-year veteran from Texas A&M, is the starting strong safety for the 2-0 Chargers, who play the 3-0 Ravens on Sunday. Kiel's status for the game is unclear.

Drafted in the second round in 2003, Kiel was expected to start that season for the Chargers before he was shot three times in an attempted carjacking in Houston in July of that year.

Kiel is making $500,000 this year and has two years left on his contract.

This is the second major off-field incident of the season for the Chargers. Linebacker Steve Foley was shot three times Sep. 3 when he confronted an off-duty police officer who had followed his vehicle on suspicion of drunken driving.

Per Florio PFT

"And, once again, Playmakers was a grossly unrealistic depiction of real life in the NFL."

Greed indeed and pure stupidity..sometimes you don't appreciate what you have untill you lose it and that goes for everyone.some of those players think they are invincible and life only about more money..let him learn the hard way if he ever learn..at least he has the time in his side

I don't know how the league expects these guys to feed their families on a mere $500K per year. What else can the guy do but sell drugs in order to put food on the table? Stop judging him people! [sarcasm/off]

Just put a big "L" on his forehead. :bang2:

This too will be just a side note to the media...Top story of the day belongs to TO and the possible conspiracy theories as to why he was "really" in the hospital.

Dont these guys know that they make enough $$$$$$$$

For some of these guys, there will never be enough money...and with all their hangers on, there is aways a need for more money. Not to mention a lot of these guys never seem to be able to get away from the criminal elliment that they grew up with.

i wonder if he was doing it for the money. quite possibly he was a guy who had connections to get stuff for personal use and liked to be "the man" and get a little extra to hook up all his friends or aquantices.

sounds like someone dimed him out.

curious to know what the substance was and how much he was moving

Wasn't it Erik Williams that talked about wanting to be a drug lord or something like that?
Just ridiculous...one of Kiel's game checks is probably worth a LOT more than he would've made dealing in a week. Now he won't have either for a while.
Good call idiot!
Unbelievable, wish the League would start doing lifetime bans for things of this level of stupidity. There are plenty of great players that don't do ******** stuff like this and are good role models and citizens...
