noone is going to trade for him, too expensive, the most likely scenario is AJ wanting to keep him off the market, and have a whole year to get him under contract for a few more years
If A.J. Smith decided to trade him for a 4th rounder right before the draft, he could. The market has not yet set his value. The 1st and 3rd tender was to keep the wolves at bay.

So I guess you believe that the Chargers are not going to trade him? They very well could keep him but it is not etched in stone. I would not at this date say that A.J. Smith has mismanaged this situation. I think that he did the smart thing in maintaining control. Period.

Don't you get it? Yes, you maintain control of him -- for one more year only. Then, he's out the door. Smart teams like the Patriots would trade him for a high pick (if they could get that) and draft another back to replace him. Turner is good, but he's not irreplaceable.

And as for your argument about controlling where he goes, that's silly -- the tender level decided that. Neither Denver nor anyone else is going to give a 1st and 3rd for him.

Superpunk is right -- A.J. Smith has mismanaged this almost as badly as he did the Brees situation. From this whole coaching fiasco and from what I've heard of him on ESPN radio, Smith is probably just hanging on for dear life. That's probably the real reason he is keeping Turner -- desperation.

I know I'm looking WAY far ahead here, but considering that Jones is in the final year of his rookie contract, I would be ALL OVER this guy next year as an UFA. Turner and Barber could be a VERY lethal combo.

how do you know they won't try and trade him now anyway? Not bad insurance for LT if they think they can make a run either. He would look good with a star on his helmet.

So, if the Chargers trade Turner to a NFC team for a 1st rounder prior to the draft, he has mismanaged this situation. O.k., I get it.

Edit: Could someone please explain to me what does the 1st and 3rd round draft picks have to with a trade in this instance?

No, if Smith trades him for a first, he's done a good job. But it sure doesn't look like that's going to happen. I can't see a team doing that.

There you go. Thus, no one at this juncture can say that A.J. has mishandled this whole thing. We will have to see how this all plays out. If he stays and we win a Super Bowl, great; if we get a 1st rounder for him, fantastic; if we get the Jets earliest 2nd rounder, #37 I believe, I will not be too mad. We need a FS, WR, and OG. Unfortunately, there are teams ahead of us in the draft that need the same thing, like the Cowboys. We can't shake you guys. Our needs are similar.
