Chargers to release L.T. before roster bonus 2/4/2010 12:04:14 PM

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports Chargers star LaDainian Tomlinson is due a $2 million roster bonus on March 5, the first day of the new league year. Provided the new league year is not postponed to allow for further collective bargaining negotiations, Tomlinson will likely be released before then, because the Chargers don’t seem inclined to pay his $5 million total salary. Both sides have said since a restructuring of Tomlinson’s contract last March that the deal would not be reworked again

If we had room in Dallas and for the right money I would love to bring him home to finish out his career. With that said, Not sure how he will look in a Texans uniform.

A forlorn LaDainian Tomlinson may have played his last game in a Chargers uniform.

LT vents on Bolts issues, outlook
LaDainian Tomlinson knows he has played his last game as a Charger.

“I’m not coming back,” Tomlinson told The San Diego Union-Tribune on Thursday. “I don’t believe I’ll be back in San Diego. I’ve accepted it.”

After more than a month of saying he did not know what would happen, Tomlinson said he has believed for a while he would be let go by the Chargers.

“I’ve been praying and meditating,” he said. “After doing that for a couple weeks, I just felt like it was over.”

Tomlinson has two years remaining on his contract, but he is due a $2 million roster bonus March 5 and would be paid $5 million in total salary in 2010. As part of the renegotiated contract he signed last March, he is guaranteed $1 million by the Chargers for next season.

Speaking by phone, Tomlinson paused a lot as he spoke of his future and of his past.

“It’s a mixed feeling,” said Tomlinson, the league MVP in 2006. “It’s mixed emotions. I’ve spent nine years of my life here, pretty much my youth. I gave the organization everything I have. I enjoyed the community.

“But there is a part I won’t miss. The football part is fun. But the business part sucks. I won’t miss that.”

Tomlinson said he doesn’t know when the Chargers will release him. He said his agent might call the club to expedite the process.

Not much of a surprise since we expected this, but it solidifies the inevitable. The Chargers will have a lot of fixing to do with their backfield as Darren Sproles, a restricted free agent, is the only competent running back on the team. LT is only worth keeping on deep rosters.

The Chargers may be able to get good use out of Hester as a goal line/short yardage back, but they will need to find a good back up for Sproles.

Tomlinson will be a Commander next season

My money says Houston who is looking for a RB and gets Tomlinson closer to home.

I can see him playing in Houston with Slaton. I wouldn't be shocked, however, if the Commanders picked him up cause it's just the kind of thing that Danny Boy loves to do.

And of course you can't put it past New England to give him a look cause they love to have players like that. I could see him going there as well.

LT is looking for a ring, so he's going to a contender. I wouldn't rule out NE, Indy maybe, Philly..... I would say here but we're too loaded at RB.

Tomlinson very average these days.

I am not even sure if he is average these days. He had no 100 yard games this year and only two games where he averaged more than 4 yards per carry. He is no longer a receiving threat. The only thing he still does very well is score short yardage TDs in goal line situations.

Houston lost some close games this year where they failed to score in goal line situations. LT could fit that role for them.

It was really only that Chargers game for Dallas. Other than that it was dumb penalties that took them away from the goal line that caused Dallas to not score in some of those goal line situations. First and goal from the 1 or 2 yard line would become 3rd and 15 or something like that. It was not really an inability to gain a single yard running the ball except for that San Diego game.

Looks about done IMO. SD has a good OL and a coach that is an expert on the run game, and he's done nothing for 2+ seasons now.

He's not the answer for anyone at RB now.
