Charles Barkley: Golf makes Tony Romo a better football player

5/24/2010 7:38:51 AM

According to the Dallas Morning News, former NBA star and current NBA analyst Charles Barkley sat down with Galloway & Co. on ESPN radio to talk about a number of current events, including Tony Romo and his off-season golfing.

Barkely said of Romo playing golf: I think it will help him. The level of concentration it takes to get through all the qualifiers, I think it probably does make him a better football player. And from a common sense standpoint, clearly he’s under a tremendous amount of pressure, so I think it would help him in football, more than anything. The level of concentration, the stuff he has to go through on a golf course and attention to detail, I think it really does help in football and he’ll probably tell you that.

I agree with Barkley I think there are benefits to the game of golf and I think that is why you see so many athletes playing the game. From the mental aspect Golf is a game where whatever you did the shot before you must move on and focus on the next one. It is also a game of recovery, even the best in the game will not put the ball where they want to and often find themselves in situation where they must recover from a bad shot.

Most people do not see it that way.

Others who have a clue about these things do.

Should anyone really take advice from Charles Barkley!!!!!!!!

A guy that throws people out through glass windows at a bar, a guy who loses big money away on bets at Casinos, a guy that can't control his own weight, a guy who gets caught picking up hookers on a regular basis when he's not thinking about running for office. I think the last person you would want to take advice from is Charles Barkley!!!

This ought to be good.

Yes it should be good. My guess, either he bails and never answers the question, or he shoots from from left field with some hair brain rant about how bad of a character Barkely is and nevers answer your question. Care to place beer on it? :laugh2:

I think you're dead on.

Has anyone else noticed that Romo's golf game and football career have kind of been following the same path? A few years ago, I remember him always having poor final rounds in his attempt to qualify for tour events. At the same time, he always had poor games at the end of the season, playoffs or made a big mistake that cost the team the game. This past year, he has actually had more success in golf, actually winning a spot in a playoff, and has not seemed to wilt during the final round. This coincides with getting over the hump and winning a playoff game.

In my opinion, Romo is evolving as a competitor. Maybe he is learning how to keep his emotions under control even during extreme pressure situations. I know he didn't have a good game against Minny but noone did. That was a team failure. I love the fact that Romo is a competition junkie and I think he may be getting very close to knowing how to win under pressure. Is anyone going to be surprised when Romo earns a PGA tour card after retiring from football? I get the feeling he will spend his forties playing on the PGA tour.

I could see Romo one day playing the Senior tour

and he’ll probably tell you that.

oh yeah, how many championships did you win charles barkley, and how many did michael jordan beat you on because he worked harder, studied more and practiced more mr do nothing charles barkley

to be a champion you have to practice like a champion, work hard, study, prepare and get your team ready

you sure cant get your team ready to play football if your out on golf course playing twidley links on the golf course, when you should be on the football field practicing, studying, looking at film, working with jason garrett on offense

when its your off time, then you can go play golf, basketball or whatever, but football time, its football time; not some other passion besides dallas cowboys football

Yet Jordan is a bigger golfing junky than Barkley is. The game of golf is not replacing the practice needed by an athlete in their given sport. Golf can benifet guys in the mental aspect of the sport they play. More than just a few professional players have said that including Jordan, John Elway or John Smotlz.

exactly, how many times did michael jordan beat charles barkley because jordan worked harder, studied, practiced, but barkley was out having a good time doing something else like golf on practice days

thats true, but jordan was always practicing on the court and he always beat barkley because jordan practiced harder, etc.. while barkley was out having a good time,

how many championships did jordan win vs barkley?

its like jimmy johnsons teams in the 90s, he worked them, got on their rear ends when he had to, then worked them some more, and got them ready in all aspects of the game, then in 4th quarter the cowboys generally took over, because they were more physically and mentally tough then their opponeents in the 4th quarter

thats why the buffalo bills didnt win one of their 4 attempts at superbowls, they didnt work hard enough, study enough, practice enough, from their head coach

You completely ignored his point to repeat your sewage.

Michael Jordan plays more golf than Barkley.

Always has. Played even on game days.

you know I don't see anything wrong with that; he did show up for OTAs. he is in valley ranch all the time. he is a competitive guy and likes the feeling of competing. it is his off season. he can go hang out on the beach, mow his lawn (favre), party or play golf. what's the big deal? dont' people play golf on vacation and their time off? but we make a big deal out of it for Romo because he is ****** good!!

Jordan played allot more golf Brakley so tell me how many championship does Jordan have? :laugh2: No one said you must not practice the sport you play that is the most important thing you must do all anyone including Barkly is talk of the benifet of golf in how it is a plus for an athlete in the mental aspect. No where did Barkley say Romo should play golf instead of practicing football.

Maybe if Romo took off two years to play baseball...
