Charles Tapper: Can He provide immediate impact?
http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2016/6/11/11909806/charles-tapper-can-he-provide-immediate-impact

...Our Cowboys are heading into this season with some question marks at the Defensive End position with the suspension of Demarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory, and the long awaited departure of Greg Hardy. Could it be possible the Cowboys drafted the potential future anchor of the defensive line?

I believe so, and I really can not wait to see what Charles Tapper does for the defensive side of the ball this upcoming season.

Charles Tapper is a freakish athletic specimen who clocked a 4.5 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in February, and during his collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma he recorded 15.5 and recorded 7 sacks this past season before declaring for the NFL Draft.

Tapper did not begin to play football until his Junior year in high school and was given two choices by his mother get a job or play football. His senior season he racked up 100 tackles and 5 sacks and also caught 10 passes for 200 yards and scored 5 touchdowns. He also played AAU basketball for the Baltimore Elite. The Cowboys obviously did their research on Tapper and believe that his athleticism and talent outweigh his general knowledge of the game.

I compare him to Jason Pierre Paul who was considered a true project with raw talent at the pass rushing position, but over time showed the football world that he could be one of the better defensive ends in the NFL.

Can we make a case that Tapper could make an immediate impact in his first year under the helm of Rod Marinelli?

Rod Marinelli has plenty of experience in coaching young defensive line talent, and developing them in to pro bowlers. Marinelli has coached the likes of Warren Sapp, Simeon Rice, Jared Allen, and Demarcus Ware. He has another chance to do the same with Charles Tapper and Maliek Collins, and even last year we witnessed the progress and development of Demarcus Lawrence....

I do think he has potential to be an impact player, but we have to be realistic based on where he was drafted and understanding of the game. If he could come in and record 4 to 5 sacks as a rotational player in his first season I would consider that to be a highly successful rookie campaign. Even a player like Ware one of our greatest pass rushers in history only got 8 in his first season as a first round pick.

I had forgotten Tapper had 4.5 speed at the Combine. His progress in that initial season in college is fairly encouraging as well. Now, let's just see if his past history will be destined to continue in the pro ranks of the NFL. If nothing else, he shows promise. It does appear Marinelli will be afforded someone pretty special to work with.

Let's bear in mind that it's extremely difficult for a rookie to make an immediate impact in the DE ranks of the NFL. Let's not expect miracles but rather be patient and remain hopeful for some initial success.

All situations have different merits...and one has to base each opinion on what actually occurs. Not stereotypes. They guide energy and price, not outcome.

Another guy who played out of his natural position to help his team last year...

In his senior year, Charles Tapper recorded 50 tackles, 10 for a loss, seven sacks, three pass breakups and four forced fumbles. According to ProFootballFocus, Tapper generated 35 total quarterback pressures last year on 386 pass rushing snaps. 258 of those snaps were as an interior defensive lineman where he recorded 17 hurries, 1 QB hit and 5 sacks, while 113 snaps were as an edge rusher, where he tallied 10 hurries and two sacks. According to RealSportsNetwork, Tapper also recorded 29 run disruptions.

At 6-3 and 271 lbs., it has been mentioned that he is physically comparable to former Cowboy, Anthony Spencer.

I'm wholeheartedly hoping that he'll manage at least the extent of success in Dallas that "Almost Anthony" had.

You want to lower expectations for rookies but then you look at the success journeymen like Hayden and Selvie had and it makes you wonder how much can he get out of Tapper.

I'm not sure about Tapper just from my memory and brief outside view of him he seemed to be a guy that got stone walled a lot and didn't get a lot of consistent pressure. I was surprised he ran as fast as he did. Will it tranafter to the field? Who knows but I sure hope it does.

He'll also get schooled daily by our OL -- should make any DLman better.

It's been said by scouts that he has a tendency to get upright altogether too often.

Well, here's hoping insistent coaching corrects it. We'll soon see about that.

All I know is he has a motor. I remember him chasing down WR's down field, where most Dlineman stop after the 2nd level. Amazingly fast for his size.

2 completely different players.....IMO

From NFL.com

Strengths
Good size and build. Has natural power at the point of attack. Shows some ability to battle and fight for his area of grass. Technique is flawed in many areas, but has some traits. If he ever learns to drop pad level, has effective bull-rush potential. May have the body type to play 3-4 defensive end or 4-3 base end. Has some straight-line speed to close out the quarterback in space. Heavy tackler who can thump runners. Showed some positive flashes late in the season of what he might become. Raw with room to develop.
Weaknesses
Offsets natural power and strength with terrible pad level too often. Offers minimal value as third down player. Plays with very little dynamic movement as a pass rusher and usually just crashes straight ahead with no real plan. Hand usage needs major work. Doesn’t use hands effectively to control the point of attack or to improve his position as a pass rusher. Needs to play square and control gaps when engaged laterally against the run. Instincts and awareness are way off from where they need to be. Slow to see plays developing and can be even slower to disengage from blocks to make tackles near the line of scrimmage.
Draft Projection
Rounds 3 or 4

Sounds like a 2 down player who...if we are lucky will step in for Jeremy Mincey...about the same size...6'3 270lbs. If he can give us Mincey's production in 2014...I think you take it and be happy.;)

Jeremy Mincey

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Mincey

On March 11, 2014, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent, who were looking to improve their defensive depth after being forced to release DeMarcus Ware for salary cap reasons.[9] He quickly developed into one of the Cowboys leaders and was named a team captain after Justin Durant was lost for the season. He led the team with 6 sacks and 39 quarterback pressures, after starting every game and keeping second round draft choice Demarcus Lawrence in a reserve role.

In 2015, Mincey missed the first four days of training camp in a contract dispute. He started six of the first 13 games, including four that Greg Hardy missed while he was suspended by the league. His playing time and effectiveness decreased during the year, after he was limited by bone spurs in his right elbow, that eventually required offseason surgery. He didn't register a sack during the season and was declared inactive against the Buffalo Bills. Besides playing defensive end, he was also used at the one-technique defensive tackle position in passing situations.
