I enjoy watching football games from the 60's and 7's on YouTube, especially Cowboy games. It seems every big game Charlie Waters has one or more huge plays. I was just watching the Hail Mary game and Charlie makes a HUGE play to sack Fran Tarkenton on 3rd down with about 2:00 left to give the offense one more shot.

He retired about the time I was old enough to really watch football. I never hear talk about Charlie going into the Ring of Honor but it would be hard to find another defensive player who made more impactful plays for the Cowboys.

For some of you who got to watch the Cowboys back in the day.. How good was Bob Hayes?

Ive looked for highlights of his but it’s just those ugly zoomed in NFL films style videos. I wish people could make some actual game highlights of players from that era and not the NFL films style that’s way too zoomed in.

He was good enough to be elected to the Hall of Fame, the Cowboys ROH and for the league to come up with the zone defense to try and defend him. I started following the Cowboys in 1972 and saw the last three years of his career with the Cowboys. He was pretty washed up by then. He was dropping a lot of passes and got the nickname butterfinger Hayes. He only caught 44 passes for under 700 yards his final three seasons in Dallas. His first couple of seasons in the league teams had no clue how to stop him.

I can't think about Charlie Waters without including Cliff Harris. These guys complimented each other perfectly. Those were great times for our team.

Yes he was very good and instrumental to the cowboys success in the 70's. Problem is there were too many very good players on those teams. The 70's Steelers face a similar issue where several excellent players never really got their due either.

Go Cowboys!

He and Warren Wells basically were pioneers from the 3 yards and a cloud of dust era, to the modern passing era. Both were faster than any DB they went up against. Time to start throwing deep. Lance Alworth who got a ring and ended his career in Dallas was another one.

Bob Hayes was so good (and fast) the zone defense came about because of him. Hayes had 9.5 speed and 10 hands. He held the Cowboys record for career receiving touchdowns for over 40 years until Dez finally passed him.

Loved charlie, loved that whole team actually... childhood heroes, one and all...damn I wish I could go back to that time

helluva player.
very smart.
had a knack for making a big play when we needed it.
played his best in big games.

Charlie Waters along with Captain Crash Cliff Harris has never been close to being underappreciated by me. They are some of my childhood heroes along with Captain America Roger Staubach and Tony TD Dorsett. You guys loom large in my memories of the good times growing up.

Yes! the great era of the 70's.

The 70’s was the best time to be a football fan!

The Tom Landry Show was must watch TV!!

“Monday Night Football with Howard Cosell and Dandy Don Meredith”

Hank Williams. “Are you ready for some football”( was that the 70’s or 80’s?, either way 100 times better than Kerry Underwoods song).

Remember watching the Rookies with Kate Jackson and then when that went off at 9pm it was that time for MNF.

BH was a wonder to behold, it’s a shame that old games aren’t remastered and available. His numbers are incredible for a running era receiver. His first two years were unparalleled in the era and only 14 game seasons.

If you were to write a definition of a football player, just sketch a picture of Charlie Waters in his Dallas uniform, there you have it. I am old enough to remember watching him at Clemson, I live in ACC area. Charlie was a QB and wide receiver there, actually. He had football intellect, saw (and hit) EVERYTHING. as someone above said, "Helluva player".
I always thought it was a Landry thing that he converted a couple of college quarterbacks, Dan Reeves RB, and Safety Charlie Waters to key positions and stardom.

Charlie Waters left more of his heart on the field than almost any player in Dallas Cowboys History. His career was resurrected when Coach Landry moved him From CB to Strong Safety in 1975.He was outstanding in the Playoffs and is still tied as the All Time Leader in Playoff Interceptions.Landry had tremendous respect for him.

Bob Hayes changed football with his amazing speed and outstanding athletic ability. He was brilliant during the first 7 Years of his career from 1965-71,averaging 46 Catches,920 Yards(20 YPC) and nearly 10 TD's per Year, numbers that rank with anyone of that era when the NFL was a "run first" league. And was a great Punt Returner as well.No one could cover him 1 on 1 in his Prime.

Those teams spoiled us rotten, and with #12 Roger Staubach and #33 TD and #88 Drew Pearson and others I never felt like the Cowboys couldn't come back ever. That Doomsday defense was no joke. I miss those days very much.
