His real name is Charlie Wilson... I've known him for over 30 years...

Charlie Ward played football at FSU...

He was a party animal and a babehound... but a really cool guy...

Hanks didn't even come close to portraying him although I enjoyed the movie. He was much bigger and more charismatic than Hanks' portrayal. Charlie was bigger than life and he'd drink a beer with you anytime...

But he did pass, you are right about that... RIP Charlie... you were one of a kind...

Charlie was a guy that could have been a presidential candidate with his skills...

But his OTHER skills took him out of the loop. He never met a decent looking woman we wouldn't sleep with (which resulted in his divorce). He never saw a beer he wouldn't drink... and later on apparently he had an affinity to cocaine.

The cocaine Charlie was never the Charlie I knew. I don't know if that is true or not, but he was always balls to the wall. He lived life in excess. He was known to his constituents and Washington insiders as "Good Time Charlie"...

I used to work for Buddy Temple (Buddy Temple's father, Arthur, was the last holdout of the Cowboy's owners that finally sold to Jerry) and Charlie was a good friend of his, so I met him on many occasions...

Charlie was a conservative Democrat that always brought the pork home. He was very good at stroking the constituents and getting reelected. I think he was contested twice in my life... and those elections were colossal beatdowns.

True to the movie, he did wear boots all of the time... but unlike Hanks. he was 6'4" of solid intimidation and never dressed as bad as Hanks did. Charlie NEVER took "no" for an answer if he believed in a cause... thus "Charlie Wilson's War"... He was a very powerful man...

He had his faults, but he was a decent human being... and friendly to a fault...

I last saw him about 16 years ago... and true to Charlie, he remembered me. He talked about watching my dad play football and how good he was...

He was shrewd and passionate all at the same time...

He is worthy of being remembered...

RIP Charlie... you were one of a kind...

I have yet to meet anyone who can match me with beer.

Now you have... ;)

I don't drink a whole lot of beer, but I have a freakish resistance to it...

Let's go... you buy if I win... ;)

Danger, Danger! Will Robinson!

Thanks for the inside story on Charlie. My folks met him once or twice, and came away real impressed.

You tag-teamed with Charlie?

That's an accomplishment.

Its rare that you can point to someone who clearly changed the World. Charlie was one of those few. RIP and may all your times from now on be good.

I was too young to remember him much outside of the local news items I'd see on him when I visited my grandparents in east Texas. He was definitely loved down there though. I do remember that much.

I probably passed by that movie 100 times on HBO without ever watching it. Finally I did, and it was steller. Now I can't click past it without stopping and watching it.
