However, based on their impact on the team's success and their contributions to the franchise, here is a subjective list in descending order:

  1. Roger Staubach (Quarterback)
  2. Emmitt Smith (Running Back)
  3. Troy Aikman (Quarterback)
  4. Bob Lilly (Defensive Tackle)
  5. Larry Allen (Offensive Guard)
  6. Michael Irvin (Wide Receiver)
  7. Randy White (Defensive Tackle)
  8. Tony Dorsett (Running Back)
  9. Mel Renfro (Defensive Back)
  10. DeMarcus Ware (Defensive End/Linebacker)
Its a good list. I have no problem with Ware over Bullet Bob. A lot closer to what I would have done anyway.

Interesting the article describes Mel Renfro as a "versatile" back that was all pro 10 times. What a poor choice of adjectives

Deion Sanders: Sanders played for the Cowboys from 1995 to 1999 and was one of the most electrifying players in NFL history. He helped the team win Super Bowl XXX and was known for his exceptional speed and coverage skills.
Doesn't belong.

Bob Hayes changed the game. If not for his after-football difficulties, he'd be celebrated among the best

Understandable, curious who you would sub out at 10 to replace Deion?
Rayfield Wright. Chuck Howley. Bob Hayes. Cornell Green. Darren Woodson.

I also don't believe mercs should be included in this list. If so, you'd have to consider Lance Alworth, Herb Adderly, Mike Ditka.

It's a very subjective list of course. For me, It's:
Roger - don't think this can be questioned
Lilly - really only saw him play at the very end of his career when I was too young to understand, but going by all I've heard and read and especially comments from Landry
Randy White - just for knocking out Charles Haley at a time when he was terrorizing current players when you are in your 40's or 50's alone puts you on the list as an All Time bad ***. Toughest, meanest Cowboy ever?
Yes, it can be questioned. Lilly, then Roger.

No, that would be Roger
honestly, its not even close..... Roger is number 1 by a mile. That isnt knocking ANY other Cowboy great. I LOVE E. Smith... he was a monster and without him no way in hell we win 3 SBs in the 90s... but come on.....if you think Emmitt is number 1... you were likely born in 1980 or after.

Why? He was versatile. He played both CB and safety. You see, versatile is a compliment, not an insult.

I think Roger is #1, but putting Lily or Emmitt #1 is perfectly reasonable. Both are among the best to ever play their position. Emmitt was undeniably the best player on a team that won 3 titles.

Deion shouldn’t be on the list he jumped on board with the Cowboys 7 years into his career. I’m only counting the players we drafted and developed. I think Bob Lilly should be third on the list.
That was not the question posed to AI. Please pay attention

My ten in no particular order:

Randy
Too Tall
Roger
Emmitt
Irvin

Allen
Dorsett
Lilly
Pearson
Woodson

Obviously, there are quite a few more deserving of the top ten. I don’t consider Sanders and Haley to be true Cowboys or they would be in the list somewhere……even Owens for that matter.

I started watching the Cowboys in the early 70s overseas in the military that’s all you could get on satellite was the Cowboys. How can I not love Roger the star what it represented. Roger could play in any era. I truly believe that the beatings he would take , and I live 20 minutes from Gillette stadium and I can’t stand Brady. Lol.

I have no problem with the list....but i would put the top three as Roger, Lilly, and then Emmit.... and i also agree Deion should not qualify as an all time great Cowboy. Great player but not on this list. I would put Bullet Bob instead of Deion.

Deion is regarded by most football fans as the greatest corner to ever play. Not only did he take the ball away, but when he did, he often took it to the house. Then he would go back and return punts, and hed often do the same. To say someone considered the best at his position to EVER play football is not an all time Cowboy great is showing whatever bias you have against him.
