That was last year. Andy Dalton left by season's end, so we knew come draft time that we had a serious hole at the backup QB position, yet the Cowboys refused to address it during the draft. How has that decision worked out so far? Not too good, huh? Let's not defend this front office's incompetency.
I'm not defending squat. You said "Just look at last season" and I was responding to that.

I totally disagree. Look at the dilemma we currently are in? If Dak goes down with another injury, this season is toast! All because the Cowboys are hardheaded and refuse to take the backup QB position seriously. That's the most important backup position on the team which we all know why. Just look at last season as a perfect example of what happens...

that's when you go back into the vet FA pool to recruit your vet backup QB .. your Mitch Tribisky, Joe Flacco, Colt McCoy, Tyrod Taylor,
Cowboys tried to pursue Jeff Griskel though he's not notable as the aforementioned names,

..

We had a pretty good backup QB last season, probably one of the best in the entire league. Didn't help our situation, but a top 5 starting QB would have had a hard time with all the 2nd tier backups we were starting.

Our OL was a cesspool of injured linemen. I felt bad for anyone QBing for the C'boys in 2020. I was surprised Andy didn't get killed.

Lingering hamstring injury that's had him out since OTA's.

Heard they might have to amputate his leg just to prevent any gangrene to set in. Those nasty hammy injuries can end your career here in Dallas.

edit: Oh never mind, my inside source was off target.

Ok, so Trask was the last pick taken in the 2nd round. I was 1 pick spot away from being correct. The point is there were QBs to be had in the 3rd round if the Cowboys were ever serious about covering their behinds in case Dak got injured and/or their current backups totally suck as we see now.

What's so hard to understand about that? Cowboys simply messed up by refusing to address the backup QB position in the draft.

And we would be in the same boat with any QB taken in the 3rd round or later as well. I know Dak was a 4th rounder but let me know how many of those there are in the history of the NFL.. I am in the mindset you take a QB in every draft, but to think this would solve our back up QB position this year is just silly.

ND Book (4th rd) and Texas Ehlinger (6th rd) were the only other two QBs to be drafted after Golston. Trask (late 2nd), Mond (early 3rd), and Mills (early 3rd) all went much earlier.
But does anyone believe if Dak went down that any of those rookies would save the season? I know Dak did it himself, but it’s extremely unusual for a rookie QB that isn’t a high first rounder to do much.

Don't draft a Gholston in any round. NFL history indicates this.

Try as an UDFA maybe.

Truth be told, Dak only did it because he had one of the best offensive lines of all time and a rookie RB who was on fire.

That’s all true, but he had the second best rookie season ever behind only Marino.

It wouldn't have hurt, would it? Silly is not trying. Did you feel the same way when the Cowboys used a conditional late 4th round pick on Dak? I bet you didn't believe Dak would become so good, huh?

We needed a long snapper or Tight End
They had a long snapper that had never had a bad snap. They cut him. That is what happens when the special team coach wants his guys on the roster. Even perfection can not beat cronyism.
