Folks, here is the FUTURE @ NT.

Walter Thomas DT

DT Walter Thomas of Northwest Mississippi Community College participate in Mississippi State's Pro Day, working out indoors on FieldTurf in ideal conditions. Thomas originally entered school at Oklahoma State.

Thomas (6-4 3/8, 374 pounds) ran his 40s in 5.11 and 5.27. He also had a 1.73 10-yard dash, 24½-inch vertical jump, 8-foot-4 long jump, 4.84 short shuttle, 7.76 three-cone drill, 27 bench presses and 11½-inch hands.

I remember that this kid was one of those mega recruits coming out of high school. He got kicked off of OSU's team for reasons I do not know. The kid is a monster.

374, thats a BIG man? How good is his endurance? Only 27 benches though, for that much weight?

My only concern would be how well he stays in shape.

i would not think that we would allow him to stay at that weight, and we would want him down to about 340-350.

And only 27 bench presses makes you question how much of his weight is muscle, because you'd think he could do at least 30.

Then again he may be all muscle and an absolute beast. I am just going off first impressions when reading that.

I saw a picture of Thomas somewhere not too long ago, and he's built rather like Leonard Davis... IOW, he's not really fat, he's just a BIIIIIIG boy...

I am amused at his 40 time, the first bio I saw of him said he ran the 40 in the 4.8-4.9 second range... I was skeptical at the time... but if he can run a legit 5.1 40, he's still plenty fast enough to play NT in the NFL... or worst case scenario, he can be moved over to the OL... imagine him lining up at RT, with Leonard Davis lining up at RG... that would be nearly 750 pounds worth of right side of your offensive line...

With guys this big, its all about the footwork and footspeed. How quick and nimble is he? weight is a concern, strength though can be built.

Actually, other than the size, those numbers are all rather disappointing... his vertical jump would have been the second worst of all the DL who worked out at the combine, and his long jump and 3 cone drill would also have been among the worst... his 40 time is adequate, but not impressive, same with his bench press...

From what I'd read about him, I expected him to be a bit quicker...

I don't know much about the guy -- but i have heard folks say that Phillips likes a huge NT in the middle. However, with character issues present and the team's stated focus on staying away from guys with problems, I'd think he'd only get a shot in Dallas as an undrafted FA.

his 1.73 10-yard dash is damn good though

btw, how far do you expect a 370lb man to jump?

Get him down to 350 or even less and I would bet that those numbers would get much better. This guy deserves a close look.

Kinda of hope we bring him in as an undrafted rookie FA and tell him we want him down to 354# by beginning of TC. Our trainer should be able give him a program to follow and he'd have at least 10 weeks to drop those 20#. Even if he only manages to lose 15#, that will tell us a lot about his motivation to play pro football. If this kid has any talent, bet Ireland knows all about him.

laron harris is a freak of nature. i can't do a back flip and no man that big should be able to either.any ideas where he may go in the draft?

he could jump to the 5th, but I think 6th/7th round is where he'll end up

There is a picture of Thomas at this site:

A Really Big Man from a Small School

2007-nfl-draft

Walter Thomas

What does the 2005 NFL Draft have similar with the 2007 NFL Draft? There were/are two players from a community college that were/are major NFL Prospects. In the 2005 NFL Draft, Larry Brackins was from Pearl River Community College and was drafted in the 5th round (19th pick) by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brackins tested positive for steroids and is not on the Bucs roster currently. This year in the 2007 NFL Draft there is a monster defensive tackle named Walter Thomas from Northwest Mississippi Community College. Thomas weighed 6' 5" 370 pounds at the Texas vs. Nation All-Star game, and can reportedly run in 4.8-4.9 range. He was heavily recruited, but left Oklahoma State early in his college career. Thomas Played in only two games this year for his tiny Community College, but completely and utterly dominated those games with 16 tackles, 9 tackles for loss and 4 sacks. Thomas is only a junior, so this young man has a lot of upside. He has been all the talk recently among NFL Scouts, and I have even heard some say he could be drafted as early as the 5th round in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Being huge and running well is one thing but I am more interested how a NT plays with leverage and if he really enjoys playing football. The NT position is a no glory position and if you don't have a passion for your job you aren't much good and you may wind up quiting and getting into the roofing business.

350 pound backflip........thats amazing. I can put on quite a show on a trampoline but I don't dare put my feet above my head with concrete waiting for me.

Strength is like speed.

You can build your strength as high as your genetics allow.

Everyone that works hard in the gym, does not become a 500 LB. bench presser.

With that in mind, a man weighing 370 and pushes, only 27 reps is pathetic!

These comments from DRAFT DADDY’S bowl coverage:
http://www.draftdaddy.com/prospects/TexasNation.cfm

TEXAS VS THE NATION BOWL COVERAGE
Texas Vs The Nation Day Three Practice Report By Sigmund Bloom

- Walter Thomas, DT, NW Mississippi CC - This man mountain (6'5" 335) was heavily recruited but left Oklahoma State early in his college career. He can reportedly run in 4.8-4.9 range.

Top 5 Players

1) Walter Thomas, DT, NW Mississippi JC
2) Josh Swogger, QB, Montana
3) Nick Smith, C, San Diego State
4) Brent Curvey, DT, Iowa State
5) Stephen McCoy, CB, Texas A&M-Kingsville

Walter Thomas, DT, NW Mississippi CC - Unstoppable when he got a good push, showed a good spin move (!) and was astoundingly nimble for a guy his size (think Gabe Watson at his best during Senior Bowl practices last year - dancing bear). Seemed to tire, and then get second wind. Didn't excel on every play but was dominant when he did. Got lots of individual coaching and encouragement. Talk of the scouts in the stands. Jags practically drooling on him

Walter Thomas (DT - NW Mississippi CC) also had his daily share of astounding plays, absolutely destroying Jonathan Palmer (OL-Auburn) on one confrontation - Palmer has been one of the most outstanding OL all week.

Walter Thomas (NW Mississippi JC) still stood out when he did everything right. I interviewed Walter - he's a very shy kid who probably has no idea how much buzz he is creating.
