Check out this Cowboy mock

I don't think it would matter. Horn ranks out better then does Surtain so it wouldn't be a shock to see the team take him over Surtain. Plus, he fits the scheme better.

How do you see Horn as fitting the system? Personally i'm fine with Horn or Surtain and think it's a no brainer to draft either, however, i'd edge towards Surtain if both were available.

Just feel that as Quinn appears to like playing players to their strengths then we are probably going to play a lot of Cover 1 (utilizing Neal and Wilson in the slot playing SS).

That leads to whether we have the FS with range to cover both CB's (possibly need more with Horn/Diggs) or whether Surtain continues to be more lockdown which focus's more plays towards Diggs and a FS that edges to his side. I accept that this lessens the turnover possibility on Surtain's corner, but i'm assuming he'll be covering WR1 and just stopping the large play would be his remit.

I'm certainly happy with two potential ballhawks out wide, just think it may be easier (especially on the FS), to lockdown (CB1) and ballhawk (CB2).

Interesting question. So, it's actually why I like Horn, over Surtain. First, neither are bad players. Both are really good CBs but, Horn grades out better then does Surtain, especially for us. Think about Richard Sherman and then look at both of these two CBs. Which one fits that profile better? It's all about how Quinn wants to play Defense so yes, I agree 100% that it all of it depends on the Safety we have but, Quinn will not be drafting for what we have today. He will be drafting for what he sees as our Defensive scheme and personnel in the future.

OK, so if you look at both of these players, I think Surtain is probably the better man up cover corner. If you are going to play that kind of style, he's very good at covering his guy all over the field. But that's not the Seattle scheme. Seattle asks their corners to cover a limited area and then turn coverage over to the deep Safety in the role coverage scheme design. Basically, their corners use a shade step or slide step or step kick technique. I, personally like to get a bump off tight technique and create this advantage off the snap but in the case of Seattle, they do it with a shade step technique, which means that they basically create cushion buy lining up head up on a WR and just prior to snap, take a lateral step out. Basically they are creating spacing in order to get into coverage. So, they will then play a very physical down the field. Very handsy, lots of contact and just always in your face, until they have to give you up to the Safety coverage. This is Horn, 100%. That guy is exactly that player, in terms of just physical, always messing with you down field, doing every little thing to get in your jock and piss you off. Surtain, he's not that guy. He's a cover guy all over the field but that doesn't really fit the scheme. This is not a knock on Surtain, it's just a scheme thing and what you ask out of your players to make the scheme work.

Both are very similar in size, Horn is faster and quicker. Surtain is probably a better boundry CB, he uses his size a little better and he will not get beat badly, which means he's always in position to make a tackle but he isn't really that quick twitch, sudden, explosive reaction CB. Horn is a press man cover corner. Now, that may not be very popular with most teams but it would be in Seattle and you would think in Dallas, now.

So what fits you better? Surtain is not going to be that guy that makes you think of Deion. He only has 4 picks in three seasons. He's going to be Troy Vincent IMO. Horn, he's Richard Sherman with better speed and quicks.

Interesting. I'm just started getting interested in Defense (bit of a novice....like the Jones). I think i'm overly obsessive about us to be able to play Cover 1 with Surtain locking down WR1 and leaving/enabling Digg + FS hawking interceptions vrs WR2. By the sounds of it Quinn plays schemes that fits the players and so I wonder if his Safety board would change depending on which (if any) CB he took at 10?

Another interesting point. So, I don't believe Quinn changes the scheme to fit the players, anymore then any other Coach would, per say. I think he will do what he has to in order to work with what he currently has but, I think that he will draft to fit the scheme.

So you understand, I am not for drafting a CB at 10 overall. I would rather see Sewell fall and grab him there but, if that's not what happens, if we can't trade down, if the choice is Surtain or Horn, I like Horn. I actually don't want to spend that high a pick at CB because CBs are not as important in this scheme, as is the FS. That guy has to be future All Pro type quality IMO. He has to be a do it all player, best athlete on the field kind of guy. That's where the first rounders and big money should go. Corners, I think we can find in the 2 through 4th. You can get the best athlete in the draft to play CB but unless he can play FS, he's not going to help your Defense as much as a really great FS will. That's how the scheme works.

I suppose Quinn is in the dubious benefit of starting again knowing that he needs a CB and possibly a FS.

There doesn't seem to be an all round 'star' at 10, though I like a defense to work as a unit and players are only as good as a the players around them...a weak link brings the whole defense.... in light of that i'm also quite willing to trade back especially as there appear to be a number of CB's, FS's, DT's and projectable OT's in late 1st/2nd and 3rd rounds.

I agree.

Not my favorite mock, so that's probably what Dallas will do.
