Reports: Strahan would consider returning, Giants open to idea

ESPN.com news services
Updated: August 25, 2008, 9:00 AM ET
Former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan would consider returning to the team in the wake of Osi Umenyiora's season-ending knee injury, the New York Daily News has reported, citing an unnamed source.
According to the paper, Strahan, 36, who retired in the offseason after helping lead the Giants to a Super Bowl championship, would come back with the Giants if offered an $8 million contract for this season, according to a source close to the seven-time Pro Bowler.

A Giant Hole?

Michael Strahan's retirement has proved part and parcell of the Giants' struggle this offseason to maintian a Super Bowl caliber defense. Defensive end Osi Umenyiora was the latest loss.

"If the Giants make a sincere overture, it's a good chance that Strahan would consider coming back," the source said, according to the Daily News. "There are other things he has to take into consideration: the money and his contract with Fox."
Strahan currently holds a position at Fox Sports as an NFL studio analyst.

"But if the Giants really want him, they have a shot," the source said. "It's not out of the question."
The Giants appear open to the idea.
Co-owner Steve Tisch told the New York Post the Giants have warmed to the idea.
"Would I like Michael to be a New York Giant this season? Absolutely. Absolutely," Tisch told the Post. "Will he be? I have no idea. I don't even want to put a percentage on it but things changed very quickly [Saturday] night and if one of the potential solutions is to reach out to Michael, worst-case, it's certainly worth a phone call.''
Strahan was in Greece on vacation Sunday when he heard the extent of Umenyiora's injury, the Daily News reported.

Strahan wouldn't confirm the possibility of returning in an interview with the NFL Network.
"I haven't heard from anybody else, so to say if I would or wouldn't is premature," Strahan said. "So I'm enjoying my retired life right now."
Coach Tom Coughlin said the team is considering all its options.

Strahan retired in June, ending a 15-year career highlighted by the Giants' stunning Super Bowl victory over the unbeaten New England Patriots.
Coughlin recently talked with Strahan about his new career working on Fox's pregame NFL show on Sundays.
"The only thing I talked with Michael about was his new challenge, moving forward in his new assignment and he was very excited about that," Coughlin said, according to The Associated Press.

Agent Tony Agnone said the Giants have not contacted him to ask about Strahan.
"Obviously, he loves the Giants and obviously he is working for Fox," Agnone said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Right now he is relaxing and getting ready for his Fox gig."
Strahan missed all of training camp last season while mulling retirement. He reported to the team a little more than a week before the season opener and played well.
However, he trained while thinking about retirement last year and was in good shape.
The Giants open the season on Sept. 4 against the Washington Commanders.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Strahan isn't in football shape. I seriously doubt he's been continuing his football workout regimen since retiring, especially since he's on vacation in Greece.

but if I recall correctly Strahan said the best part of retiring was not having to take care of your body the same way.

hes already admitted he doesn't work out like he used too, etc.

if he came back it might be too big a risk for him.

I could see Strahan coming back. It's really no sweat off his back to do so since he doesn't have to worry about the rigors of training camp and if he comes back and plays like crap because he isn't in shape, it's all good considering he's one of the Giants all-time great players that just got off of winning a Super Bowl. More or less it's easy money for him.

To add to what I already said...

..since I live in Commander land, I heard a Chris Cooley interview this morning where they asked him about the Strahan situation. Not that Cooley would be an insider source for the Giants, but he said Strahan hasn't been working out for the past 6 months, and he can't just 'show up' and play football at a high level.

The Giants would be better off going with another option... that being said, go ahead and bring back Strahan.

In my opinion, this is a foregone conclusion. I think the Giants pay, and Strahan plays.

Colombo pretty much has his number either way.

He knows the defense and for a guy like him who has done this forever he could most likely be in shape in 6 weeks.

His Cardio shouldnt take but about 3 weeks.

Its the not lifting weights that will hurt him the most.

Somehow Strahan stayed in Cali last year then joined the team after TC and was able to get stronger and stronger as each game went on.

I think Strahan is a freak of sorts... not TO-freakish, but freakish nonetheless. I could see him coming back and slowly working his way back in. Probably in REAL footbal shape by game 3 or 4.

With that said, Guck the Fiants. Suck Frahan.:starspin

yea but at what level ?

That's a good question. And one we won't be able to answer until he hits the field.

But I would add that Strahan's value isn't just physical.

He's an inspirational leader for that defense as well and brings a lot of experience.

I think circumstances have fallen perfectly for Strahan to make a nice chunk of change to replenish what his wife took in the divorce.

He'll still have a TV gig waiting for him next year.

I'll be shocked if he doesn't come back.

He'll comeback, probably, but it will take him at least a month, month and a half, into the season to really get into football shape. So for a little while he won't be much of a factor other than taking attention away from Tuck, which is probably all they really want him to do.

Yes, Strahan is a freak. The years were he was setting records for sacks he was basically doing it all on bull rush moves. I hated to see it since he played for the Giants, but it was amazing to see it. But the past few years he's trimmed down about 30 pounds and relied on technique and speed and did a good job of transitioning to that as well.

Yeah.... he was never a Cowboy, there was never really a chance of him being one... but if he could have been. I would have been ok with it.

But he wasnt and isnt so................**** lol

I think Strahan would be fine if he came back. Work him in slow.

Right, but at that point he was still working out on his own and preparing to play football. This is a completely different scenario.
