This is what I love about pro sports. You can go from being underrated and overlooked to overrated with one contract.

He may well prove he's worth this money. I'll state my not-so-important-opinion that I don't think he'll ever be anything special, and most certainly will not live up to that contract. He has some good traits, and for that reason I don't think he'll be a total catastrophe. But for that money, he can't just be the 16th best QB in the league, which is about where I'd expect him to settle.

KC got fleeced.
He's a system QB. He's a good scrambler and a decent passer for short and mid range routes, but he's not worth that much money.
It's easy to look good when you're receivers are Randy Moss and Wes Welker and have a great OL.
Also when your OC is good, and your coach is Billycheat.

The only thing he will have in KC is Dwayne Bowe and Bobby Engram.
Do they still have Larry Johnson?

Either way, NE OL is far better than the KC OL.

So it is easy to look good with Moss and Welker?

How about with Owens, Witten, Barber, and 3 OL making the probowl?

How about with Irvin, Novacek, E. Smith, and rotating cast of perennial pro bowl OL?

Stupid arguments are revealed when applied to the team you root for.

The point most are making is KC's OL is aweful and they have few weapons and no weapons that match that of NE's. He may indeed be a solid QB but in this situation its more likely he'll be Scott Mitchell #2.

I hope for KC's sake that we don't start hearing the name, "Scott Mitchell," a backup who had a killer year starting because of injury, landed a big contract, and then flopped.

That is what I do not get - right to the large money.

Not even a step up based on performance.

They is gonna be a bad football team without giving him some weapons, kinda like Schaub in Houston apart from Andre Johnson.

You haven't watched the Texans in a while, have you? :)

The had the #4 offense in the NFL last season and it wasn't just Johnson. Steve Slaton gained nearly 1300 yards (4.8 ypc) and they have a top five TE in Owen Daniels (70 catches 800+ yards) and Kevin Walter had 60 catches for 900 yeards.

They're going to be a good team if they could ever improve the God awful defense, but the offnse is the real deal.

I know a lot of NE fans in real life and on the internet.

95 percent of them would have cut Cassel in training camp last year and were amazed that he made the team.

He will make a very capable bus driver but he is going to have a real tough season in KC this year.

I think that is CRAZY money for a guy like him.

Few weapons? Hmmm, they had a "crap" line last year but added two serviceable starters, they have a very talented Dwayne Bowe and a couple of decent RBs. They aren't going to blow anyone away but it isn't like they have zero talent... and I doubt they are done with player acquisition.

KC lost their biggest offensive weapon in Tony Gonzales. They are not as talented this season as they were last season, so I expect their offense to struggle. Of course you don't sign Cassell expecting to turn things around in one single season. They are re-building and think he is a QB you can build around. It will take 3 or 4 years to find out if they are right.

He should send a delightful fruit basket to that KC lineman who caved in Brady's knee.

Guess Bill was the brains in NE the whole time. Pioli just gave a very mediocre QB, all pro money.

Totally agree.

He may not be a complete bust, but I think he's destined for above average. I think he'll look horrible with no talent around him next year.

At least the Chiefs had the sense to front load the deal, so that if cassel does bust, it won't screw the franchise on a long-term basis and they can cut their losses after three years.

Huh? How else would they structure a contract? When was the last time you saw guaranteed money handed out in year 5 or 6?

What you've described is the structure of any large nfl contract.

Only in the NFL can you start for one season, be a slightly better than good employee, miss the playoffs, and still sign a contract that guarantees that you will live a comfortable lifestyle for the rest of your life.

NE went 11-5 and missed the playoffs.

How often does that happen? Missing the playoffs is not an indication of a poor performance when you go 11-5.

The locals aren't sold on this deal at all.

We knew Cassel was getting a new deal before training camp. But this?

Good deal for him because he is going to suck in KC. This makes the Romo deal look like a bargain.

The alternative was a 1 year 14 mill contract for 2009. So basically they doubled the guaranteed cash and came way with a lower cap hit while spending about what you'd spend on 2 years of a franchise player. They've actually lowered his yearly salary with this deal.

If folks in KC didn't expect something like this then, I have to say, they aren't the sharpest tools in Missouri's shed.

No actually, he is very much like Brady, a product of an excellent college system combined with the opportunity to learn on the bench for several years. You can cry "system" as much as want, but Cassell came in smart and 100% ready to run the O. That sort of talent and intelligence doesn't grow on trees.

I live in the Boston area and Vtwin nailed it. Cassel was on the verge of being cut during training camp and for some reason was kept. It looks like genius now to the rest of the world, but for those of us in the area, it was luck.

Romo was on the verge of being cut in TC a few years back too.

Funny that a guy "on the verge of being cut" would come into the season as the #2 QB. You'd think at least that he would be demoted to #3 if he was so bad. Perfect example of how reality and the chatter on sports talk radio are often so different

spin doctor all you want, but giving a guy who was nearly cut last yr in TC a huge deal with a bunch of guaranteed money for playing decent for basically oen season is stupid.

again, how can you be "nearly cut" and start the season as the #2 QB?
