Chiefs release veteran safety Woods

Chiefs release veteran safety Woods
NFL.com wire reports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (May 18, 2006) -- The Kansas City Chiefs released 10-year veteran safety Jerome Woods.

A Pro Bowl selection in 2004 after recovering from a severe leg injury, Woods played little last season and his future with the Chiefs seemed shaky after two safeties were taken in last month's draft. His 720 career tackles rank seventh in team history.

Taken as the 28th overall choice in 1996, Woods played in 128 games. He had 15 interceptions, returning two for touchdowns. He had a career-best four interceptions in 1997, when the Chiefs led the NFL in scoring defense with 14.5 points a game.

Kansas City's starting safeties are Sammy Knight and Greg Wesley. The Chiefs drafted Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page.

While they are not dancing in the streets up here, no one is exactly crying over him being cut either.

What's it going to be then, eh?

He hasn't been much since he broke his leg a while back. If we needed a backup in-the-box safety, we could do worse. But we have Keith Davis who would be outstanding in that role.

We were interested in his last year when we were desperate enough to sign Tony Dixon and Lynn Scott. I don't think that is the case any longer.

Parcells alluded to the fact last year that they wanted to cut Woods vs Pile but couldn't for cap reasons.

I remember WOods in his prime, he was very good in coverage, could line up at CB, just like our own Woody, well maybe not as well, but well enough

5 or 6 yrs ago YES but not now.

definitely 5 or 6 years ago we would have jumped on this guy like we did with Aaron Glenn, but then again, he wasnt cut 5 or 6 years ago for the very same reason, he was pretty good in coverage, could line up at CB some, in his day

I would have no issue with bringing him to camp and let him compete for a backup job.
