Really surprised Jim Harbaugh didn't see the error of his ways and trade Kaepernick rather than Smith.

The 49ers were a better team with Alex Smith. Undisputed.

Still over a month until April 1.

This could be good for us.

Maybe Geno falls to us at 18 and we get a decent trade offer or two.

I don't see Geno making it to 18. Some team ALWAYS gets desperate for a QB and reaches in the 1st round. That could well be Arizona or Buffalo. Even if he did make it to us, I doubt we would get offers.

huh? someone will pick him before 18, but if he makes it to 18, nobody will want to trade to the spot? why not?

Because they know the teams after us won't go for a QB. They can easily snag Geno in the 2nd round.

ESPN is reporting that it's just a 2nd this year and a mid-round pick in 2014. If so, that's a pretty good deal for the Chiefs as Alex Smith is the best FA quarterback available. This also confirms that either Joeckel or Fisher will be the first pick in the draft.

Joeckel might slide big time. He's been unimpressive in the combine, and his tape is apparently not that impressive to the pro scouts.

Doubt he falls that far, but we can hope. And I'm glad that, even as a WVU homer, you didn't suggest we take Gino if he fell to 18. Impressive. :starspin

First, I think this guy will be a bust. And second, I think the read-option will have a very short lifespan in the NFL, similar to the wildcat. Defensive coordinators are busy solving it right now.

So the '9ers now have 15 picks in this year's draft, and 5 in the first 3 rounds. Wow.

Geno Smith is not a read option QB...

It's a terrible move. They had a chance to grab a potential franchise QB but are now making a lateral move from Cassell to Smith while losing 2 high picks in the process.

It doesn't work that way. Other teams are allowed to trade to.
Who's to say the team right after us doen't trade the pick?

I do think KC taking Smith pushed at least one QB down some though. Not from the 1st overall pick--there was no QB worthy of that this year--but from somewhere in Rd1 and 2.

All I know is that the 49ers just picked up what is basically a 1st rd pick. In fact, they wanted to trade the picks they're getting for Smith, they could turn those picks into an early 20s 1st round pick this year.

He could do the read option if asked, but that really isn't his skill set. He is more of a faster version of Daunte Culpepper.

I don't think anyone would assume that. Anyone could jump in front of them at any time. Just because he fell to 18 does not mean he will make it to round 2.
