There will be a point in the future where the NFL will either go away or will not resemble the game we see today.

The government should fine the NFL several billion dollars for hiding this fact (they clearly knew the truth) just like the government should find the tobacco and oil industry for all the damage they knowingly caused..

The problem I have with this issue is that everybody is complicit. The NFL is complicit because they have known. The Players are complicit because they also know and they continue to play and use. The Fans are complicit because honestly, we don't really care. We figure they know the score and if they decide to do this thing for stupid amounts of money, that's on them.

As long as there is demand and trust me, there will always be demand for this kind of thing, nobody wants it really changed.

To me, the only real way to fix this is to go back to a brand of Football that was old school. You gotta get Growth Enhancement Products out of the game. These guys are too big and the style of football played today is just to high impact. We gotta get players back to a more natural physical makeup and we have to start playing football with our shoulders instead of our head gear.

The biggest disappointment I have had as a fan is the decline of basic fundamentals in the game. I almost hate to watch it anymore. It is so far from what I learned as a young kid.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Good piece. Sadly this narrative is becoming more and more prevalent. Thanks for posting Plankton.

Also, valid points ABQCOWBOY.

I see the players point, but...what Lester Hayes said also says much.

I have to agree and while I know there are probably some who might not agree with Hayes, I'd be willing to say that a larger part of the fan base does. It's hard to look at players making what they are making and living the life style they are and then go back and feel empathy for them later. We see these collisions every week during the season. Many of us have played, at least a certain level of Football, and we understand what those hits mean. This is also why many of us don't have an issue with players wanting to get all they can in contract negotiations. It's a business and while you can understand and have a certain level of sympathy for the players, I just don't think the sentiments are there to crucify the NFL over injuries. I could be wrong but I just don't see that in society.

No. Given the governments ability to TAX.
They will put a $5 surcharge on every NFL ticket to cover the costs related head injuries for players.
The government will manage the fund.
Then dole out $ to players who can prove they were injured while on the Job.
Sort of like workers comp.

I'm pretty sure there is no way that happens. The overhead for such a minimal amount of NFL players would make that incredibly inefficient. Workers comp exists for hundreds of millions of people. The NFL has what? Less than 1,700 players and you think there will be an entire government department setup for this? No.

The government will force the NFL to do right by the players. Pretending it's not football causing it is as bad as greenhouse gas companies saying global warning is not happening. The players are putting themselves at risk too, so some of the burden lies on them too.

The NFL needs to add a disclaimer to every contract a player signs that warns of concussions and future brain problems ending the leagues liability to that player. If the player is concerned about it then don't sign the contract or if the player does he takes personal responsibility for the results of playing the game.

This is ultimately on the player and not the league.

The NFL Should help players like talley with medical support. and some financial support if needed.
I do wonder why some players seem to be more affected than others.

Assumption of the risk has to come into play here. Hard to imagine somebody not knowing large, fast human beings repeatedly running into to each other is bad for your health before hand. Bottom line: As long as the NFL offers millions to play, there will always be people ready to take them up on the offer.

Sorry but these players knew the risks.

No one holds a gun to your head and forces you to play football. You choose that.

This, IMO, is like an MMA fighter sueing the UFC because they got hurt fighting for a living.

It's a dangerous game. No one has to play it. They choose to.
