Chris Simms Scouting

A bunch of people who watch no film and criticize the guy who actually puts the work in. You guys are idiots.

I don't care if his rankings all suck (which they haven't in the past)

At least the guy puts the work in...that alone deserves respect for his rankings

Most fans provide a lot of comedy. Most form extreme opinions based only on scouting reports and/or measurable(s). Others love players based on highlight videos.

Jeudy not in top 5 lol
He did that because Jeudy seldom played wideout at Alabama. He played in slot where he was almost never pressed and could get free release for his route running, while others like Ruggs created space for him. The fear is that he may struggle as a true #1 to get off the press and into his routes because he didn’t get that experience in college.

Chris Simms is worse than his over-rated dad. He's strictly click bait....

In a draft this deep at WR it won't be too surprising if the top 5 list looks far different in a few seasons than it did before the draft.

At least Sims is basing his opinions on film study and what he looks at in players.

Dude is CRAZY:

Simms’ Top Five QB prospects:

1. Joe Burrow, LSU
2. Justin Herbert, Oregon
3. Jordan Love, Utah State
4. Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama
5. Jacob Eason, Washington

The following are highlights from Simms’ QB draft rankings:

No. 5: Jacob Eason, Washington

Simms: “He is more of your prototypical pocket-passing quarterback. He wants to stand in there and try to throw all over the field. The first thing is, I think that type of quarterback is a dying breed in the NFL…quarterbacks that can’t get out of the pocket, can’t move around in the pocket, make plays off-schedule like that. If you look at all the top quarterbacks in football, they’re all capable of doing that…Good player, I do think he’s a guy that probably needs to go somewhere and sit a year or two. He’s got some potential, but I think he’s got to speed up his release, speed up his feet and just become a better overall athlete…My comparison would be Ryan Mallett.”

No. 4: Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama

Simms: “I do like his talent, there’s no doubt…Am I taking a little off the table because of the injury history? Yes. Am I taking a little off just because he’s injured right now? Yes…I’m not so sure he knows how to get out of harm’s way…He had a ton of talent around him (at Alabama). This is where we have to be careful when we evaluate quarterbacks…He’s a gifted athlete, he’s got great feet, he can hop around the pocket, he’s a good runner…I don’t think he’s necessarily going to be a great runner in the NFL…He’s a natural at the quarterback position, he really does understand it…He is very scary to me, I’m not necessarily sold that the type of style he plays will translate to the NFL…I’m certainly docking him a little bit because of size, injury history and further injury concern…Being in the Top 10, it would scare me with Tua.”

No. 3: Jordan Love, Utah State

Simms: “He has good size, he’s a good athlete. He does a great job of staying in throwing position in the pocket – he’s fearless that way…He can throw it effortlessly…I think he’s a guy that has room to grow. Is he a little raw? Certainly, but I think between his size, athleticism, composure – that I think showed off on film – and then his ability to throw the football. Yeah, I think his game translates better to the NFL than someone like Tua…Listen, if Jordan Love was on Alabama, his stats would look a whole lot different.”

No. 2: Justin Herbert, Oregon

Simms: “I think he’s got the best arm of any of these quarterbacks in this draft…A really gifted thrower allows an offense to open up…Really good athlete, can throw with people around him and, to me, can make the most ‘wow’ throws out of anybody I’ve seen in this draft at this point…He might not be the quickest or the fastest to accelerate, but he’s the fastest quarterback out of all the guys when he opens up…He’s a special athlete that way…I think he has an incredibly high ceiling like Jordan Love. They can be superstar physical talents who I think can take over games.”

No. 1: Joe Burrow, LSU

Simms: “It’s the cleanest film I’ve ever seen from a college quarterback. I’ve just never seen more accurate throws, more proper decisions, more of the ability to read and react in the pocket…Incredibly accurate, incredible presence and pocket poise. He really can manipulate the pocket. For a #1 pick in the draft, I just wish he had a little bit more of a physically gifted arm, but I just think everything else is so damn good, you can’t pass him up…He’s a better athlete than Tom Brady [but] doesn’t have as good of an arm as Tom Brady. He reminds me more of Peyton Manning, honestly. I think he’s more of that guy than Tom Brady. Not necessarily going to wow you with all of these power throws, but the decision making, can make all the throws, and then the pinpoint accuracy to go with it and the size and strength to throw with a mosh pit around him and not be affected. Very, very special that way.”
I wish Dallas could get Burrow or Herbert. I would honestly be excited about this team again.

I agree to a point , but some of the posters on this board are well informed on the players. How could you hint that Risen is a an idiot? Really, how could you?

Oh I didn't realize Chris Simms was the only one who watches college football. Lol

He's probably going against the grain on purpose to be different...not having Juedy in the top 3 is insane to me.
Not having Jeudy in your top 5 definitely gets views and chatter, which he achieved. It speaks to how close this receivers are. Any of the 6 top guys will be good picks in any order. Trying to rank them is hard because they’re all good players. Take one and you’ll be happy! Lol

Watching football and breaking down tape are two different things.

Other people besides Chris Simms are quite capable of rewatching games and analyzing players. That's all I'm saying. You don't have to agree.

And other fans put too much faith in their own intellect based on absolutely nothing. Your correct on the comedy of it, I laugh all the time.

For me

1. Burrow - He’s Tony Romo with some Brady like attributes as well. He can run better then Romo could too as well as buy time in the pocket.

2. Tua - Probably the most natural instincts I’ve ever seen a QB have in college. It’s like a RB with great vision except at the QB position. You just can’t teach what he has.. He’s my #1 pick if he’s healthy.

3. Herbert - He’s the most talented QB in this draft and I think his floor is high and his ceiling is high. He’ll be a top 15 guy in the pro’s. Has the potential to be top 5.

4. Eason - Just an incredible arm and made some throws that none of the guys in this class could even dream of. He has no mobility though. He’s stuck in the pocket. That arm talent is incredible though.

5. Jordan Love - He looks a lot like Mahomes but he’s a year away from being able to play NFL football.. He’s raw.. Makes a lot of bad decisions and just needs a ton of work. He’s a 2nd rounder to me.

I don't really know what that means.

There are those guys that make the Cowboys related videos. Even if they are wrong more often than not, at least they review game footage and attempt to form their own opinion instead of just reading a few blurbs or just looking at forty times...

I actually rank my QBs same as Simms...
because I have the same knocks on Tua.

The rest is actually exactly what most other people think.

I kinda wanna dislike Simms because this is a kid who came to UT from New Jersey and rode in a limo to the school....
Tone def as could possibly be.
Lost that UT squad before he ever had it.

All that said he is really good in these breakdowns. He is talking real football.
A little bit of scout chatter but mostly just realistic how skills translate to NFL teams and situations.

His 2019 WR breakdown was
1. DK Metcalf
2. Parris Campbell
3. Hollywood Brown
4. Deebo Samuel
5. AJ Brown

that's a better ranking than the actual NFL teams drafting them. PFF rated 4 of these 5 in their end season top 5.
Campbell was hurt all season and fell way out.

All that said Jeudy is def in my top 5 WR this class. Ruggs is the Bama WR I would drop out of the top 5.

I will say I like his Jeudy commentary here though. He explains he feels his best ability is route-running and that is overblown.
He's right in the sense a guy who gets open routinely with great routes but can't break tackles or make people miss has a very real ceiling. See Cole Beasley for example.
