Seniors Chuck Howley, Joe Klecko, Ken Riley selected as finalists for Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023

CANTON, OHIO – Chuck Howley, Joe Klecko and Ken Riley have moved to the final step in the selection process for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023.

A meeting of the Hall of Fame’s Seniors Committee concluded Tuesday afternoon with Howley, Klecko and Riley emerging from the group of 12 Seniors remaining under consideration as Finalists for next year’s class of enshrinees. That list at one point numbered 127 former players whose careers ended no later than the 1997 season.

The Hall of Fame’s full Selection Committee will consider Howley, Klecko and Riley for election – along with 15 Modern-Era Players and a Coach/Contributor – when it meets to choose the entire Class of 2023 in January. Each of the Seniors Finalists would be elected to the Hall if he receives at least 80% approval in the up-or-down balloting.

It's a shame that Howley has dementia at this stage of his life. If he gets in, and he absolutely should (it's literally yay or nay, with his inclusion not preventing anyone else from having a spot), it should be a moment that he can celebrate in. Here's hoping that the selectors right this wrong.

Howley - 180 games played. Klecko - 155 games played. Riley - 207 games played.
Howley - 7x Pro Bowler, 5 of those First team All Pro. Klecko - 4x Pro Bowler, 2 of those First Team all Pro. Riley - 1x Pro Bowl, only First Team All Pro
Howley - SB MVP Klecko and Riley - none

Klecko has more sacks than either Howley or Riley, but he was a lineman, many more opportunities for sacks. Riley has more interceptions, but he was a cornerback, much more opportunities for interceptions. Howley was an all around player, Klecko and Riley were in a more narrow area of the game.

Based on Pro Bowls alone, Howley is no. 1. Add in the good quantity of sacks and interceptions, he should be a lock. But he was a Cowboy, we'll see how it comes out....

I've never thought of Klecko as a HOFer, but Riley and Howley should've been inducted long ago.

Howley's long list of credentials are already in this thread, and Riley is still tied for 5th all time in picks. He's the only guy in the top 8 who is not in the Hall.
