I know that Howley was awarded the MVP award for Super Bowl V. But I read on Wikipedia that he refused the award. Is this true? I never heard that before.

Yes sir, that is correct. He deemed an award to be worthless in the face of defeat.

I think that was just a rumor. I had heard that before but it was not in the news at the time, and it would have made news.
I do know he was the 1st Def player to receive it and the only player from the losing team to be named MVP.

You will get no argument from me. I think his exclusion is a travesty.

I was looking for a source other than Wikipedia for people. Stumbled on this one. I decided to post it because it is a top 10 and the top 2 were Cowboys.

On Howley it says this.

1. Chuck Howley, Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowl V

Topping our list is the first defensive player to ever win the Super Bowl MVP award, and thus far the only player from a losing team to earn the honor, Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley. In many ways, it’s amazing that anyone was deemed worthy of the Most Valuable tag in Super Bowl V, a game so filled with turnovers, penalties and mistakes that it has been dubbed the “Blunder Bowl”. Both Johnny Unitas and Craig Morton threw touchdown passes in the game, but combined for five interceptions on the evening as well, and Colts RB Tom Nowatzke ran for 33 yards and a score as well. Howley, on the other hand, picked off two passes on the game and was determined to be the best player on the field. However, he refused to accept the award, deeming it meaningless in defeat.

No good reason why he should not be in the HOF.

One of my favorites.

It's true.

Another little known fact is that Craig Morton accepted it (as first runner up) for his invaluable performance in helping the Colts win their first Super Bowl Trophy.:D :banghead:

Funny. The reason I questioned the wiki entry was that on his web site it says he was a Super Bowl MVP. So I thought maybe it was just a rumor since he is now claiming it. (rightfully so I might add).

And I agree. Howley not being in the Hall is absurd.

Absolutely! Just more solid evidence of the anti-Cowboy bias that prevails among HOF voters:banghead:
