Church vs McCray

Now that we know Hamlin will be the new starter, it's probably coming down to church vs mccray at safety. I just don't think we keep 6 safeties, especially when we need to keep 10 oline and cb is more valuable than safety.

So, who's it gonna be?

I say McCray. He's too good at ST

Joe D likes McCray alot in todays camp reports. That boosts his chance big time IMO.

Pat Watkins will most likey be gone so the Cowboys need someone like McCray who can replace him on special teams and not miss a beat. McCray will be on the roster this year

There is no way to sneak either of them to the practice squad. I think Church will be a star and I think McCray will be a stud special teams player. If I'm the cowboys, I'm looking real closely at Hamlin's play the rest of the preseason, and Watkins should be traded to the Dolphins.

I really liked both of them. Very impressed. I think it’s time to move on without Watkins. Go with the younger, hungrier, cheaper players.

I still don't know whether Hamlin is best suited at FS or SS. I think he's a smart player that can mentally handle playing FS but physically, I don't know if he's quick enough. At SS, I don't think he's an in-the-box type safety that can rack up tackles in the running game either. So he's versatile in that he can play both positions...we just don't know how well he can play them. Meanwhile, Barry Church looks like a legit SS that can be a force in defending the run.

I'm high on Church, too, but a star? I was hoping for 'legitimate starter,' and I thought that was ambitious.

hopefully both. unlikely but one can hope

I say Church. As much as I love a special teams demon, I would definitely keep a player who looks like he can really play safety (and did so very well in college) over a college backup that is a special teamer. I remember when we drafted Charlie Williams and I said to myself "This guy couldn't start in college and he's gonna be a pro because he can cover kicks?" He never amounted to anything. I'm sure guys like Church and Hamlin will be fine on STs, even if they are not as good as McCray. You don't cut a guy who can play safety for a guy who is just a really good special teamer with less potential at safety (in my opinion).

I'm not against McCray at all, but I prefer Church because of his greater potential at safety.

I think you find a way to keep both for now and let time sort out who is the better player. Watkins is no longer needed and you have quality depth at DL and LB so there is no need to go deep at those spots. With only keeping one kicker and maybe going with 5 WRs, you can find a spot for both.

I really like Church, but for him to make the team he will have to make plays in both of the next two games. His knock is he isn't very fast. Of course, if he defies that by continuing to making plays, I'm sure he will get a spot on the roster.

One thing is clear, he is always around the ball.

Unless either player struggels in the last 2 games, you find a way to keep both. McCray is excellent on STs which replaces Pat Watkins. Church appears to be a solid S prospect with physicality and impressive range.

Yea I think Watkins is gone, so we should be able to keep both.

I think McCray is on the team...this should make it easy for them to let Watkins or Hurd go. Church is on the team, whether on the 53 or PS. He has shown too much to let him walk...hopefully he continues to be solid.

I would like to keep both, but as a former DB I'm biased.

And for the record, I think both will make the team, but only under certain conditions. I think Church's play at safety makes Watkins expendable, and I think McCray only makes the team if Hurd is traded or released.

Well the issue there is Watkins can play special teams, but he is also an experienced NFL safety. Thats something you don't get with either McCray or Church. That is what will make it hard for either to replace Watkins.

Watkins is gone either way. They don't want to pay him and safety isn't the hardest position for a young guy to play.

Michael Hamlin could step in and there would probably be no drop off from the starters.
