Watkins is gone either way. They don't want to pay him and safety isn't the hardest position for a young guy to play.

Michael Hamlin could step in and there would probably be no drop off from the starters.

Considering Hamlin is always injured and these other safeties are playing very well. Hamlin could be close to being a bubble guy too. Right now, I would say Barry Church is competing more with Hamlin for a job than Watkins. McCray is competing with Watkins since they are big special teams guys.

Thats a interesting thought but I think Hamlin is most likely going to be our starting safety next year.

If Church can beat him out then major props to him but I doubt Dallas would let go of their draft pick.

I would like to keep both, but as a former DB I'm biased.

And for the record, I think both will make the team, but only under certain conditions. I think Church's play at safety makes Watkins expendable, and I think McCray only makes the team if Hurd is traded or released.

Yeah I think McCray and maybe one of the other young guys is the main competition for Hurd....not Holley.

I think they keep both. These two can bring more to the game than many of the other players such as Bright and Ogletree.

I doubt either of them can knock Ogletree off the roster. I think Hurd would go first because while Hurd works hard, physically he just isn't very gifted.

you keep both McCray and Church and cut Watkins. McCray has more upside than all of them. Church is stready and more effective in the box.

Here are there salaries
Watkins - 1.176 million
Church - 285,000 (est)
McCray - 285,000 (est)

Ok, Watkins is definitely gone. But it is HIGHLY unlikely that we keep 6 safeties. Sens, Ball, Hamlin, AOA, and ________.

I knew everybody was gonna say "both," but be realistic and pick one.

If we keep 6 safeties, we have to keep only 8 LB or only 9 Oline or only 4 CB...

So do you take both over McCann, or Young, or Leon Williams?

People on here act like the roster is 60 guys deep and we can keep any undrafted player who flashes a little potential. (and i mean a little, Church has shown very little other than being in the right place for a fumble recovery)

Absolutely you keep both, being "realistic" AOA and Ball can both play CB and as a matter of fact, AOA is the back up slot coverman. Both Church and McCray have shown much more than McCann. You can bring both McCray and Church on game day. Many here have Ogletree as a pet cat, but being "realistic" he won't be on the game day roster, neither would McCann.

McCray seems to have unusual talent in special teams. So he's an immediate standout on special teams. The best hope for Church would be a 4th safety behind Gerald, Ball and AOA.

You keep McCray if you can't keep both. He's exceptional at one position already and can immediately influence games instead of Church who's merely a possible future fill in due to injury.

Agree here.

They will try to keep both. If that doesn't work out, I think McCray has the best shot. He is a better athlete (faster) than Church. I keep going back to watching Church return that fumble .... he looked like a 300-pound lineman running with the ball.

Campo is on 103.3 right now talking about the safeties, and it really sounds like he likes all of them -- Church, McCray, and Hamlin.

If I had to try to decode him, I think maybe he likes McCray the best -- said the other night he put on as good of a rookie special teams performance as he's seen in years. Said Danny is very smart as well, handling free safety and nickle backer roles well even though the calls mean opposite things depending on what he's playing.

Said Church covered better than they expected, and Hamlin was smart, pretty physical, and a ball hawk.

Said right now he was most comfortable with Hamlin because of experience, but that doesn't mean the other guys can't catch him.

One thing he did say: It's Wade and Jerry's call, but we may keep more safeties this year than we have in a long time.

If we keep Church, a slow safety, over McCann, a fast CB with return ability, I will be shocked.

And I'm pretty sure that is going to be the decision that has to get made
