Why first through third rounds? What about all rounds and unrestricted FAs?

I include DT and DE on the defensive side, not shiny LBs (even in the 3-4).

I could go all rounds and still pick up another 7-8 OL that were drafted. I am not going to go back 10-years to review every UDFA pick up and I don't think it really matters since the majority of them are not expected to stick with the team in the first place. I stuck to rounds 3-4 because that is considered a significant investment and shows priority.

As for the DL, 4-3 DE and 3-4 OLB are very similiar and often times can be drafted in-lieu of each other....thus many college 4-3 DE get drafted by 3-4 teams to play OLB, e.g. Ware and Spears.

Jerry? Wait, what? I thought JG was running the draft.:lmao:

They all get their info from the scouts although I'm sure the coaches and FO all talk to other people as well. There's no difference in networking in the NFL and other like organizations.

Once again the coaches tell the scouts what they want and the scouts tell them what's out there. That process is an all year one with everyone contributing. Do you think Jason or Jerry or Stephen or whomever gets to run the whole show? What's important is the personnel hired to scout and how well they all put it together and the organization and resources behind it. At some point people may get animated about players and I'd bet there are times when someone strongly suggests they may not want that type of player or this is the kind of player I want, yada.

It may fit people's agendas to demonize and simplify that entire process to a caricature of what it really is but the NFL is a multibillion dollar business which most teams run fairly efficiently.

Now if you want to scoff at the results over the last 20 years or so then I may join you. At some point someone has to stand up and say 'Where's the beef?'. But to ridicule it merely undermines your protests.

Below is a rough transcript of Ciskowski on The Ticket this morning. The parenthetical stuff is my addition - either I'm filling in Ciskowski's gaps or in just a few cases stuff I missed entirely - either way my best guess. I was typing it up fast, didn't tape it, so results may vary slightly. The important stuff I tried to put down verbatim but other stuff may be paraphrased. I got the entire interview - no questions were missed. Please correct if you heard anything different than me.

What about bad drafts in 2009 etc.? Can you understand how fans are frustrated? ... We try to fulfill needs but things may not work out. Scouting 101 is bringing in right kind of guy to help team (Not sure that I understood his point here whether he was talking about Garrett's RKG or just the "right guys" in general).

Basically:

" We bring in the guys who fit according to our scouting system and fit what the coaches want but in the end it's up t the player himself to make it. "

This refrain that we ignore the trenches is a fallacy. When looking at our 1st through 3rd picks for the past 10 years shows we have invested heavily in the trenches. Of the twenty-seven 1st-3rd round picks, 6 were OL (half in the last five years), 5 were DL (including Ware and Spencer in this group), and 5 LB. That is 11 of 27 picks -41% on the trenches. The remaining 11 picks were DB's, RB's, TE's, and WR's. That doesn't sound like an organization that neglected trenches. Maybe a team that can't identify OL talent, but not one who hasn't invested in the trenches (especially when considering all of the FA additions.

No way!!!! We never draft OL or DL. We play guys off the street there and load up on 1st round WRs/CBs every year.

Although Ciskowski only did The Ticket today (as far as I know), I have to believe he will be on both ESPN 103.3 and 105.3 The Fan soon (surprised he wasn't on the Fan, the Cowboys station, first).

I hope he elucidates the draft better than me, the OP did, here.

The UDFA signings, as most of you guys know, are kind of a work in progress. It's kind of a "commitment" only, until the player has a physical and until the player puts his John Hancock on the contract. Maybe another team calls up with guaranteed money on a rookie contract like, it is said Brandon Magee signed for. And we're suddenly out of luck. A few days from now, things could change.

So we might have worse UDFAs, or better UDFAs. We'll see.

please stop posting garbage.

jimmy johnson picked:
troy aikman 1 overall in 89.
emmitt smith 17 overall in 90.
alvin harper 12 overall in 91
kevin smith 17 overall in 92

how exactly did jimmy build from inside out?

he loved dl in general and had 8 guys that could play there but the ol wasn't a huge focus. he inherited Tui and big Nate. Step and big E were r3 picks.
jimmy had tons of picks so could select players everywhere. we'd draft 3rd round special teams specialists. you can do that when you have 10-12 picks in a draft.

Thanks I hate when people use JJ hyperbole
