I think it's a mistake on his part. Came to ND as a safety, had a fledgling impact as a slot WR, and then converted to RB in his fourth year. While he played well this year, he needs work as an inside runner and in pass protection. Coming back to ND for one more year would give him an opportunity to refine those rough edges. He was also dinged up a few times this season (shoulder, concussion, high ankle sprain), and for someone who didn't have a full time role until this year, it would raise questions about his durability.
Good luck to him though. He's a good kid.
He won't have a full time role next year either though. The original starter, Tarean Folston, is coming back and they also have frosh Josh Adams who emerged. So he might end up splitting carries a lot next year and or even going back to playing more slot, etc.
If he's though of as a third round guy, it's probably not a bad move.
He would have a role - Notre Dame typically has roster churn during the offseason, after draft declarations and National Signing Day. Look at DeShone Kizer - coming off the spring game, he was a distant third on the depth chart, and was thinking of quitting football. Then, a month later, Everett Golson transfers to Florida State, and Malik Zaire breaks his leg, and the next thing you know, Kizer is the starter, and has an amazing season. At running back, Prosise was going to be at best third string, and then Greg Bryant is declared academically ineligible, Folston tears his ACL on his second carry of the year, and the next thing you know, Prosise is the starting RB.
The academic requirements, the cold weather, and the like always make the offseason depth charts change a lot at Notre Dame. Hell, they haven't been at a full 85 allotted scholarships in a long time. They typically don't oversign either, so I don't think that it will change.
As for Prosise, I don't know that he would be a third rounder, because he doesn't have a truly defined position. He still has a lot to learn at RB, and didn't play all three WR positions at ND, so he has a lot to learn there too. I don't know that a team would dedicate a choice in the first three rounds to a guy who needs a lot of refinement, no matter what position a team wants him to play.
Id take him in the 4th if we sign a vet like Miller or Martin. If they dont and address HB in the draft, its going to be a player capable of 300 carries in 2016. Prosise isnt that right nowI'm not as high on him. Our top 3 picks need to be more refined players. If he's still there at our 5th I wouldn't have a problem with the pick. He has tons of upside, but he's probably going to go around the same area as guys like Booker, Collins and Williams. I would rather have either of them over Proise in the 3rd-4th. Perkins may even end up there at our 3rd as well. I think theres safer picks with similar upside and would go that route unless he falls.
