Clarification on Brewster's OL position

I'm just trying to remember, is Brewster primarily supposed to be playing RT this year? Or is he still alternating between RG and RT?

I remember reading the coaches think that Brewster could even play LT in a year or two.

For this year, however, I thought that Brewster is Colombo's primary back-up.

(On a side note, if so, Sam Young will have a tough shot making the roster as I can't see us keeping 2 RTs backing up Colombo.)

I'm thinking that M Holland is now the primary OG back-up with Proctor the primary Center back-up (unless maybe Holland or T Bright can beat him out for that role).

They decided to start him at RT only last offseason before he got hurt but said he could move to OG if RT didn't work out. Now that he has reshaped his body they think he could play any of the positions except center and believe he could push at LT in 2011. They may want Brewster to learn both OTs spots so he could replace McQuistan as the swing tackle this year.

It should be interesting to see where Brewster gets his reps in training camp and pre-season.

Brewster is being worked as an OT for either side. I imagine they will focus him on LT for now and Young at RT, but if Columbo were to go down they would start him over Young I think.

I believe Travis bright will move ahead of Holland and Procter at OG this year and Procter will be a Center over Preston.

I don't think Young makes the active roster this year. He looks like a PS guy.

Like it or not, the Big Red Machine makes the team one more year as the RT backup if Brewster is the LT primary backup. If Brewster can swing and Davis is an option, then McQ is gone.

How big wold it be if we have an interior player and a legit swing-T on the roster already in Bright and Brewster? Man. I don't see how the team can have much reason to believe we've got a player in Brewster, but it sure would make me feel better about the OL depth. Hos, are you sharing anything you've heard about Brewster/Bright here? Or just voicing your own opinion? It sounds like you have a source here.

You basically need 8 starting-quality players in this league, or a combination of 7 guys you can shift easily in terms of injury. We've got 5, and a borderline OG in Holland. Adding Brewster and Bright to that list would be big. That, or we pickup a versatile castoff prior to training camp, which is a good possibility.

I hope resigning Holland wasn't the extent of the plan Jerry alluded to.

Houck loves Brewster. He came in as a battler type but now that he has reshaped his body they say he has great feet.

Hopefully, the Cowboys will play him all preseason to see what he's got.

No need to play Columbo except for a series or two. Same with Gurode, Davis, and Kosier.

With 5 pre season game I'm sure these young guys will see quite a bit of time. I still think you use the 2nd to last pre season game as tune up where the starters are seeing around 3 qrts of play.

The thing is, that they have more info on Brewster than they would have in ANY OL available in the draft.

No, they haven't actually seen him block, but they have seen the "tools" that will largely determine if he can do the job or not.
#1.) How good of feet does he have
#2.) How strong is he
#3.) How important is football to him
#4.) How hard or worker is he
#5.) How smart is he

You give me a big strong kid, with great feet, who loves the game of football is smart and will work his *** off, I don't need to see him attempt to block anyone to know that when you put him out on the field, he will get the job done.

You talking about the 70's decade of the Cincinnati Reds? That's the only Big Red Machine I ever known.....:D

Sure. They definitely have more on him than they'd have on a rookie. It's just a risk starting a new starter at LT and backing him up with a redshirt rookie. Someplace on the OL I think you'd want to have someone with experience if you need to turn to it. The Cowboys probably think that person is Davis, which isn't as crazy as some here would believe if we really had a player at OG to replace him with. But even that is a questionable alternative to just getting a guy off the street who's started at OT for a couple of years someplace.
