This isn’t so much about Byron Jones than it is Mickey Spagnola’s classic brain dead reasoning skills.

In this recent article is trying make the point that the criticism over Jones not racking up big-time interception numbers is overplayed given what his peers across the league are doing comparatively:

“And sure tired of hearing most minimize Jones with his lack of interceptions.

So when looking at the NFL interception stats for 2019, see where only 15 guys had at least three interceptions, with Stephon Gilmore and Tre'Davious White leading the pack with six each. The remaining 28 among the top 43 each had two. That's it, two.”

Brilliant, smh.

The problem is Jones has only had two (2) interceptions in FIVE SEASONS, not just one season.

Never let the facts and context get in the way of an ill-informed point Mick.

Spagnola sounds like a kitchen utensil. Like some hybrid of the spatula specifically used for spaghetti.

I don't think it's that ridiculous of an argument actually. If the majority of CBs are averaging two INTs per year which would you rather have... A high end cover guy who wont get you any turnovers, or two INTs from a middle of the road player who will give up more yardage? It's a fair debate for either side really. Just comes down to the best way to allocate your money.

and his stats of having low yardage and completion % allowed are not always coming vs teams top receivers.
You could use that same argument against any player in the league. Who performs better going against better players?

Always seems as if when it comes to free agency, all we hear about is Dak Prescott or Amari Cooper and now even Robert Quinn
Spags needs to hang around the CZ more. There have been plenty of threads about Jones every day so far this off season.

I think some fans do over judge jones on ints
But it does effect his value none the less
He is a very good cover guy
He doesn’t get turnovers
He’s still a valuable player to have because of his cover skills
The problem is that makes you a great CB but not an elite CB
An elite guy can cover and get turnovers
The problem with jones is not ability but costs
He’s gonna get paid like an elite player and that’s great for him and if he was our only major FA we would probably pay him too
But with all we have the costs is just too high for a great CB who is not in the elite class

Phenomenal summation! Perfectly stated.

Hey OP, thanks for summarizing Spags article. I hate to even try to read his pieces because he is so verbose and rambling. He can take a simple topic and turn it into a treatise. Not a fan.

Spagnola has hated on Byron since his rookie season. He reminds me of the Dak haters in Cowboys Zone.

Brain dead? If that means showing how he ranks among other CBs in the league, sure but then you are brain dead too. Interceptions are not the end all be all stat that you seem to think it is when it comes to being a CB. The job of the CB is to cover WRs, period. The good ones discouraging QBs from throwing their way. Byron Jones being ranked 4th in the league in snaps-per-reception, 17.9 (only charged with giving up 30 catches on 536 snaps) and receiving yards per snap at .62, more than suggest he gets the job done in the "coverage" department. Jones is one of five CBs in 2019 to allow no more than three touchdowns and less than 120 yards after the catch, his 106 YAC total ranks 5th in the league. This shows QBs do not want to throw his way.

When you want to ignore these facts and propagate an your agenda that intercepts are the only thing that matters when it coms to being a CB, who is really ill-formed? It's you!

Thank goodness this won't even be a topic any longer by the end of the month. Buh, bye Byron.

If everyone is being honest with Byron.........

They will tell you that Byron is a very good cornerback in this league.
He has very good coverage skills.
He doesn't have a knack for interception.
He has great size and speed.

I don't know why everything has to be so over the top. Everything has to be so critical. Its simple. If the Cowboys had a knack for turnovers it would make sense to bring back Byron Jones. But they don't. If his best asset is "teams don't throw his way" then you can replace him. Its nothing against him.ITs free agency.
