So I've played rec football on and off for years, but I stopped wearing cleats 4-5 years ago because they hurt my feet. I picked some up again and l played last night. Unfortunately I was running and stopped, my feet slid forward and detached my toenail from the base. Very painful.

The size is what the guy who sold them to me said they should be. A little roomy in the front but snug everywhere else. What gives? Are my toenails too long? Was the guy who sold them wrong?

As of now I dunno if I'll be healed in time to play next week. My right toe is dark purple and really hurts just to the touch. I'm working from home because puttiing on dress shoes would be not possble. How come other people seem to wear cleats just fine but not me?

Sigh.

What kind of cleats are they? High, low or mid and metal or rubber?

They should fit snug and no wiggle room. For flag football, I used molded and mid and they were so tight, my feet did not move in them.

Mid rise, molded cleats. there is definitely room, you're saying that should not be the case at all?

Fail of an employee at Sports Authority told me the opposite.

The good news is that my toe has now gone mostly numb with just a little bit of a throb.

If Tony can play with broken ribs and punctured lung, you can play with your hang nail. Suck it up Mary, and get back out there!

Hey Deion, when did you come out of retirement? JK

Toenails are nothing to mess with. Extremely painful. Just get an early start on your weekend and begin drinking heavily. 80 proof at the very least.

You don't want toe room, that causes blisters, broken toes and toenails :(

A little bit of room is ok, but if your foot is sliding, that is bad.

Wear two pairs of socks. But no, you don't want any wiggle room.

I know nothing about cleats. I agree with the two pair of socks.. and I'd be prepared for the toenail to fall off. When I first started refereeing several years, I seem to annually lose a toenail. Yeah, not something a woman who only likes to wear sandals wants to happen. Warm weather months sucked.

If it hurts really bad, go to a podiatrist. They can probably pull it off for you. Toe nails grow back. Just takes awhile.

Yeah probably doesn't help that I was wearing those ultra thin style of running socks. I'll find some nice thick ones for next week. If till not snug I'll get a better pair of cleats.

Why would I want him to pull it off. I'm still holding out hope!!!

If your toenail is detached from the base, it's gonna come off anyway. Experienced toenail detacher here, unfortunately. lol

If the swelling doesn't go down, then you'll need to be concerned about infection, too. Either way, your new nail is going to grow under the detached toe nail once the swelling goes.down. The old nail could even still be on top, but eventually, it'll loosen and you'll be pulling it off yourself.
