Since the second week of the season, Drew Brees has been hovering around the top 5 in our NFL QB Clutch Factor ratings, but it took a performance in a loss to finally take the top spot.
Trailing the Steelers by seven points in the final two minutes Sunday, Brees appeared on his way to leading New Orleans to a possible overtime. But an unfortunate fumble by Terrance Copper at the Pittsburgh 25-yard-line ended the comeback attempt and cut short an evening where Brees had thrown for 398 yards with no interceptions.

If New Orleans had scored, that game would have rivaled the Chargers-Bengals early-game epic as the best offensive game of the season. By the way, the winner of that shootout is our No. 2 this week.

The categories our ranking system is based on:

Last two minutes in each half: How good is the two-minute drill?

Fourth quarter: the game is often in the balance

Red zone: Can they punch it in?

Ahead by seven points or less: Time to put a team away.

Behind by seven or less: One TD and the lead is back.

Third down: Often a last chance to avoid a punt.
After several e-mail requests, here are the top 3 in all six of our categories:
Last 2: 1. Drew Brees (144.5), 2. Jake Plummer (139.1), 3. Rex Grossman (134.5).
4th qtr. 1. David Carr (127.3), 2. Philip Rivers (124.9), 3. Donovan McNabb (110.3).
Red Zone: 1. Bruce Gradkowski (126.6), 2. Rivers (113.3), 3. Plummer (109.3).
Small lead: 1. Damon Huard (126.3), 2. McNabb (119.7), 3. Matt Hasselbeck (114.6).
Small deficit: : 1. Peyton Manning (115.5), 2. Hasselbeck (108.2), McNabb (104.8).
Third down: 1. Manning (130.5), 2. Tony Romo (113.0), 3. Rivers (109.5).

Statistics are based on 2006 season results only. Those quarterbacks eligible for the NFL passer rating title (34 this week) are ranked in each of the six categories by their passer rating. The QB with the best rating in each category is given one point, the second-best two and so on down. The point totals in the six categories are then added up and QBs are sorted according to point total – the fewer the better.

It doesn't surprise me at all to see Tony up there on third down conversions. He has been unreal converting third downs. He's converted many third and longs... including some well over ten yards.

That doesn't happen by accident... not when it's consistent. That is a trait that will serve us well for years to come.
