http://www.cowboyszone.com/2011/07/finding-cornerback-bang-for-dallas-free.html

Part three of Cowboys Nation's week-long chat with ESPN.com's K.C. Joyner looks at good but not elite corners, who could upgrade one spot without costing Nnamdi Asomugha money.

Cowboys Nation: We've talked about Carlos Rogers and Philip Buchanon in the past, but now that 4th year veterans are perhaps entering the new free agent market, let's discuss Johnathan Joseph from Cincinnati. His name comes up a lot in threads and in e-mails. How does he rate.

we don't need a CB, we need a GOOD FS!

But Joseph does look good.

You are pinning a lot of hope on the rebound of Mike Jenkins who was statistically the worst starting CB in the NFL last season.

Hope is not a strategy. I don't blame the Cowboys front-office one bit for thinking about Plan B (another good, non-elite corner).

I saw things in Jenkins last year that make me worry there are fundamental issues with him.

We'll will see.

I agree.

I was wondering if his 2010 performance and a change in defensive coordinator might even result in Jenkins not being a starter to begin the 2011 season.

Unlikely I know but I wonder if the possibility might exis?.

I'm watching old Bengal games just to look at Joseph and he's looking pretty good so far. And I haven't even gotten to his 09 film where he obviously had a better season. He missed about 4 games last year and they weren't strung together, they were interspersed in the season.

He's an overall better player than Cromartie (who I think had a very underrated season and is also a good bargain) and he comes up strong in run support.

The caveat, I've only seen him play TRUE pressman a handful of times and one of those times he was beaten for a TD by Derrick Mason in the Baltimore game. And that was from just outside the end zone. So if you're looking for a press corner then Cromartie might be a better look.

Routt resigned with OAK. Some think he got a deal which he didn't deserve. I'd take Josh Wilson if not Jonathan Joseph. Joseph will command some money though..which is a given.

Jenkins played at a PRO BOWL level in 2009. THere is really no reason why he cannot do it again. The Ball disaster and other factors contributed to the poor secondary play last year. WE get a very good FS and the secondary will be just fine.

Brandon Carr is a stud, I've seen him play a few times last year and was really impressed. If we wind up cutting Newman, bringing in Carr would be a great move.

Hmm looks like someone has been reading my posts... If Dallas were to let Newman go Johnathan Joseph would be my choice as his replacement because he's young and talented.

The 'other factors,' though, had a lot to do with Jenkins holding receivers for no good reason way too often. He had a major step backward last season.

I'm with you in hoping he bounces back, because he absolutely has to. But I could see him get victimized again, too.

Either way, this team was playing good football at the end of the season. With a probowl QB back and help at S, we've got a chance to be in the mix in the NFC. That's all you can really hope for at the start of any season.
