The official company line from the Dallas Cowboys over the past few years has been that they aren’t rebuilding. Owner/GM Jerry Jones has denied that fact over and over again, until yesterday when he pointed out that in the last three seasons the Cowboys have gone from one of the oldest teams in the league to one of the youngest.

If that isn’t rebuilding, then I’m not sure what we should call it. Heck, even Jones was a part of it by making some very difficult, but correct, decisions this off-season by sending DeMarcus Ware on his way, cutting Miles Austin and refusing to overpay the aging Jason Hatcher. This is progress, and they aren’t the only signs the team is rebuilding.

The past few years have also seen almost a complete retooling of the offensive line, all new wide receivers, running backs and tight ends on offense. The only real stalwarts are Tony Romo and Jason Witten, while Dez Bryant and Doug Free are only other real semblances of the offensive group that’s been around in the past five seasons.

Aside from those four names, most of Dallas’ best players on offense have three years or less of experience with the team. DeMarco Murray, Lance Dunbar, Cole Beasley, Dwayne Harris, Terrance Williams, Gavin Escobar, Travis Frederick, Tyron Smith and Zack Martin highlight that group. Gone are the high priced veterans who didn’t pull their weight, Felix Jones, Marion Barber, Miles Austin and Roy Williams among them...

The Cowboys rebuilding will not be completed until they have a young, stud QB waiting in the wings.

Not yet. We have to see how the defensive front plays first, and we can still always add quality depth.

I still think 2015 is the year for them to peak.

They went into this off-season with questions at almost all defensive positions. I think they will find answers at some of them, but it would be really surprising if they found answers at all of the defensive positions this season. The roster should be in really good shape going into next off-season and they will have cap space to fill any problems that arise this season.

And with the cap space, it would be a good opportunity to get an outside rusher. They seem to be available in free agency for about three years now. It's easier there than in the draft. An offensive tackle or defensive tackle/linebacker would become a good target at the top, then.

That depends on Carr and Wilcox. If we see what we saw in 2013, we might be looking for a CB/S.

I think that's how it will unfold as well,,, at a minimum they will need a couple more players to fix the front seven.

The rebuilding should never be over. They should try and get better at every position every year. They have done a lot better job drafting the last few years, but when those guys come up for 2nd and 3rd contracts, new guys have to be ready to step in.

I like the idea of getting away from overspending on our older guys, but you do need a strong veteran presence. It's a fine line, but drafting well and evaluating guys on their rookie deals are the 2 most important factors, who to keep and to let go.

Guys I Keep
Dez, TSmith, Murray(4m tops), Parnell

Guys I Let Go
Free, Spencer, Carr

Jury is Out
Carter, Claiborne, Crawford
