4 police officers shot dead in coffee shop

From Patrick Oppmann, CNN

Lakewood, Washington (CNN) -- Four Lakewood police officers were fatally shot Sunday in what police said was an ambush in a coffee shop.

The officers were sitting in the coffee shop before the start of their shifts, reading on their computers, when the shooting occurred, Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer said. Authorities believe the officers were meeting and going over cases or doing paperwork, he said.

A gunman came inside and shot all four officers, Troyer said. Two coffee shop employees and other customers inside the shop were unharmed, said Troyer, who said the shooting "was a targeted, selected ambush."

"As you can imagine, they are traumatized," he said of those inside the coffee shop. "Some are in shock."

Families of the officers have been notified, Troyer said. All of the officers -- three males and a female -- were in uniform, wearing vests and had marked patrol cars parked outside, he said.

A $10,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest, Troyer said.

Police are looking for one man in connection with the attack, which happened at about 8 a.m., Troyer said. The suspect is described as an African-American man, between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a black coat and blue jeans, with a "scruffy" appearance, he said. The man is believed to have fled the coffee shop on foot, he said.

Authorities are not ruling out the possibility that a second person was involved in the attack, Troyer said.

"We're doing everything we can," Troyer said. Authorities were conducting searches in numerous locations, he said, and dogs had been brought in to attempt to track the suspect.

A couple of blocks surrounding the coffee shop were cordoned off. Several other police agencies were on scene to assist.

There were no known threats against police before the incident, Troyer said.
Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, in a statement, said she was "shocked and horrified" at the shootings.

"I offer whatever support is needed to the Pierce County Sheriff in their search for the perpetrator," Gregoire said.

Lakewood is about 40 miles south of Seattle and 10 miles southwest of Tacoma.

Bystanders gathered outside the Forza Coffee Company, some of them in tears as they spoke to CNN affiliate KING.

The coffee shop is on the edge of McChord Air Force Base. Spokesman Bud McKay said the base was not shut down, but security was ramped up around the perimeter as a precaution.

The military has offered assistance to police, he said, but it has not been requested.

CNN's Dave Alsup and Dina Majoli contributed to this report.

Wow, that is stunning. God bless these folks and their families.

One guy killed all 4 who were wearing vests? Sounds like it could be more than one gunman.

I always harp on these cases when they are posted. This guy/guys will be found and when they are, just line them up and end their misderable lives.

Awful. They didn't stand a chance. Would love to know who did this and why.

I wonder if the police recently started cracking down on certain gangs. If so, maybe a gang was trying to send a message. That's pure speculation though. I feel bad for the families.

Well he won't have anymore chances. Sounds like a real winner...

Seattle, Washington (CNN) -- The man wanted in the fatal shooting of four police officers was shot and killed Tuesday in south Seattle after he challenged police who approached him, authorities said.

The Seattle police department confirmed to the Pierce County sheriff's office that Maurice Clemmons was killed in the shooting, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said. The shooting took place about 2 a.m. It ended a two-day manhunt for Clemmons, 37, that began Sunday after an ambush-style killing of four police officers from Lakewood, about 40 miles south of Seattle.

The slain officers were identified as Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39; Officer Ronald Owens, 37; Officer Tina Griswold, 40; and Officer Greg Richards, 42. All of them were parents and had been with the department since its inception. Clemmons was an ex-convict with a long rap sheet in Washington and Arkansas, according to authorities and documents.

Witnesses say Clemmons was shot in the torso during the Sunday morning attack, and blood and gauze bandages were found in a truck linked to Clemmons, Troyer said. Clemmons is thought to have slipped away from a home in Seattle's Leschi neighborhood Sunday night, before police surrounded the residence for about 12 hours. He was not found in the home when the investigators moved in Monday morning, Seattle police spokesman Jeff Kappel told reporters.

The night before the shootings, Clemmons had threatened to kill police officers, but witnesses did not report those threats until after the slayings, Troyer said on ABC's "Good Morning America." Clemmons was accused of child rape and assaulting a police officer in May. He had been released on $150,000 bond five days before the shootings, according to court records.

After his arrest, Clemmons' sister told police that he "had not been himself lately" and that his behavior was "unpredictable and erratic." "He had said that the Secret Service was coming to get him because he had written a letter to the president," an affidavit quoted her as telling investigators.

In addition, neighbors had complained that he had been throwing rocks through their windows. In 2000, then-Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee commuted a 95-year prison sentence for Clemmons, according to documents from the Arkansas Department of Community Correction. He returned to prison in 2001 but was paroled in 2004.

"Should he be found responsible for this horrible tragedy, it will be the result of a series of failures in the criminal justice system in both Arkansas and Washington state," Huckabee's office said in a statement Sunday night.

You don't kill a cop and make it to a Jury. That's just how it is.

This will be Huckabee's Willie Horton.
According to a relative of mine in Arkansas, Huckabee took a lot of heat in Arkansas for this stuff when he was pardoning them. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened. I wondered back in 2008 why the pardons were never a big issue.

This guy clearly had a death wish. He was probably just to scared to take his own life.

I am going to stop by the Lakewood PD when I get off work (about 5min away) to take (tastefull) pics of the flowers and growing memorial made for the officers.

I think the pics could be powerfull and that is why I am doing it, not for news or to be published.

Eh, he was never a serious contender anyway. This just snuffed out whatever small chance he had.

A friend of ours works a mile down the street from the coffee shop where they were shot.

He said that NY and Boston sent 300-ish officers and there are over 2k police cars there.

That is very cool about the Boston Police. My wife has a court case in that are this AM and even though it should only be a 20min drive from our house to the court, she had to leave 2hrs in advance.

We also live on a road that the Sherrifs office uses and this AM one of the Family members where escorted down it with full guard, very very very sad to see all the police with lights go down the road

We don't mind the traffic and what it stands for today, our two kids both have friends who's parents are Deputies and we know both of them and yea it is just tough and sad.

I keep using the word sad, but Police and other first responders are the same as the Military to me so I consider them brothers and sisters RIP
