10. What storyline will gain a host of new believers as the preseason unfolds?

Some people snickered when the Cowboys named Wade Phillips to succeed Bill Parcells as head coach, believing the former Chargers defensive coordinator will be just a rubber-stamping yes man for Dallas owner Jerry Jones. But it says here that the move will look better all the time as Phillips works a bit of his 3-4 magic with a Cowboys front seven that has the ability -- if used correctly -- to put some serious heat on opposing quarterbacks.

Phillips may be laid back in terms of personality, but he's an aggressive defensive strategist who favors schemes that allow his linemen to penetrate into the backfield, with constant pressure also coming off the edge. Outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware should get the coveted Shawne Merriman role in the Dallas 3-4, and the rest of the Cowboys' underachieving defensive talents should also thrive in an attacking mode. Phillips will get far better results on the defensive side of the ball than the man they called Tuna.
