T.O. finally learning plays?
Multiple times during the season, Cowboys players told Terrell Owens the plays in the huddle. Owens says he knew the plays but too many times he ran the wrong route, missed a block or was chastised by the coaches for a miscue. During minicamps, Owens got the bulk of the passes. New offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and receivers coach Ray Sherman said Owens knows the playbook going into training camp. It seems Owens got a lot of reps in minicamps and organized team activities to familiarize him with the offense.
Falcons covered up Vick's troubles
Long before a grand jury indicted Michael Vick Tuesday in a federal dogfighting case, Vick's performance on the football field often competed for attention with his conduct outside the arena. Vick settled a lawsuit last year by a former girlfriend who said he knowingly gave her a sexually transmitted disease. But the case was closed in such secrecy that the woman's lawyer can't even say why he can't comment on it. Vick surrounded himself with unsavory associates, two with criminal records for drug trafficking. After two friends with Vick pocketed someone else's fancy watch at the Atlanta airport, the owner said a Falcons executive offered him money to keep Vick's name out of a police report. It's clear the Falcons missed several opportunities to curtail Vick's erratic behavior, from his brushes with the law to his obscene gesture directed toward booing fans last season.
Cowher's secret Panthers deal?
The Internet is full of rumors about Bill Cowher having a secret handshake agreement to coach the Panthers next season. However, just because Cowher is living in the Raleigh area doesn't mean that is going to happen. Keep in mind owner Jerry Richardson still owes coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney a lot of money, and the franchise has had almost all of its success under this tandem. Yes, there was disappointment over last season, but Fox and Hurney can bounce back with a winning season.
Final season for Bears QB?
From top to bottom, the Bears organization has backed Rex Grossman, just not enough to offer him a lucrative long-term extension. Grossman enters the final year of his contract, and if he performs well, the Bears will have no choice but to pony up.
Who'll watch Peyton's back?
If Tarik Glenn remains unwavering in his decision and doesn't report with his teammates next Sunday for the start of training camp, the Colts face a daunting task: finding a suitable replacement. He has been the solid sentinel who has protected the back of quarterback Peyton Manning the past nine seasons.
Commish, Vick disagree on leave
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would like Michael Vick to take a paid leave of absence, but the Falcons star wants to play football this season, sources familiar with the situation said Friday.
Sources: Vick's future decided soon
Falcons quarterback Michael Vick's future on -- or off -- the playing field will be determined by early next week, according to two people familiar with the situation. Falcons, NFL and NFL players union officials held a third day of conference calls Friday to try to resolve what to do with Vick, who was indicted Tuesday on federal dogfighting charges. Several items need to be ironed out between all parties, but things are moving forward to where a decision will be made before Falcons players report to training camp Wednesday, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed. A paid leave of absence for Vick is one option being discussed, along with a suspension. The possibility still remains that he will be allowed to play this season.
