Handicapping the new coaches

about 3 hours ago :: 3240 Views

Usually new coaches take over terrible teams, but this year that's not the case. Two playoff teams from last season (San Diego and Dallas) and two teams that hovered around .500 (Pittsburgh and Atlanta) have new head men this year. Here's my prediction on how all seven new coaches will fare in 2007:

Norv Turner, Chargers: Turner, who has a 58-82-1 career record as a head coach, takes over a loaded team. The problem is, San Diego's schedule gets much tougher this season. The Chargers out-of-division slate is brutal - Chicago, Indy, Baltimore, at New England, at Jacksonville. Predicted Record: 10-6
Mike Tomlin, Steelers: The franchise's third coach takes over an intriguing team. The Steelers won six of their last eight in '06, had the No. 8 overall defense last year and will have a healthy Ben Roethlisberger. Tomlin could be the next coaching star from Tony Dungy's old staff in Tampa Bay. Predicted Record: 10-6.

Wade Phillips, Cowboys: Jerry Jones' experiment with a big-name coach didn't result in a Super Bowl, so the Dallas owner is back to a guy who won't get in his way. Phillips isn't bad, but he won't bring back the Jimmy Johnson glory days. Predicted Record: 9-7

Ken Whisenhunt, Cardinals: Every offseason the Cardinals look like a great darkhorse. Even though I like Whisenhunt, I'm not falling for Arizona again this time. Predicted record: 7-9

Bobby Petrino, Falcons: Petrino is a noted disciplinarian with a solid NFL background (QBs coach and offensive coordinator in Jacksonville). But I don't expect his offensive success in college to translate to the NFL. Predicted Record: 6-10

Cam Cameron, Dolphins: The fans are already mad about the Ted Ginn Jr. pick, and the QB situation is still up in the air. The defense will be solid, but it won't be enough. Predicted Record: 6-10

Lane Kiffin, Raiders: Kiffin appears to be a bright guy and he has great coaching genes. The question is, how long will Al Davis give him to turn around the team, because it's not happening this year. They didn't make enough significant upgrades to improve immediately. Predicted Record: 4-12

People sure do discount Wade Phillips as a head coach despite is relatively successful coaching career...

Never know he might be right. We'll see what's going to happen in the season. As a fan im not going to do too much talking for my team, im going to let them do the talking.

But I do have to say that Cowboys will be competitive this year if they stay healthy.

I agree, I won't brag about Dallas much this year either. Hopefully their play on the field will speak louder than words ever could..

Quick get a copy of this and hang it on the back of evey door at TC that should be considered and insult to every player and coach in the organisation and ought to get them motivated for the season. The fact that SD are considered a loaded team and we have just hired a coach to say yes to jerry is a joke 10-6 for the Chargers is harsh but 9-7 for the boys is insulting.

Funny thing is San Diego thought enough of Wade Phillips to make him next in line to be head coach. They fired Schottenheimer a little too late...

Well, BP said he had a 12-4 team with an 8-8 QB in Bledsoe.

We corrected the QB thing, not to mention OL, FS and K (Grammatica), so if he's predicting us to have the same record we (would have) had last year, then we're going 12-4.

I'm thrilled with his prediction.

I don't care what any particular national pub or media guy has to say about us. You never know how informed they are or what agenda they may have.

What I do care about are the fans on this site.
With the knowledge we all share on this board it's hard for me to understand how anyone can predict less than an 11-5 record.

Understand I mean PREDICT, not assure or guarantee. None of us can do that. There are simply too many variables. Injuries of course being the most significant.

I PREDICT a 13-3 record. We have the most talent in the NFC and we've had coaching changes that I believe will have a positive effect for at least this year.

The buzz at the probowl was that Dallas and S.D. had the most talent.
Sean Payton said we were the one team he did not want to face in the playoffs.

I do believe we'll receive the most NFC Championship predictions this summer.
