Coach Mike Smith believes all defenses will spend time this offseason on read option

“I think all defensive coaches . . . will spend time this offseason on it,” coach Mike Smith told D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I know that our coaching staff is going to spend a whole lot of time on it because it could be the wave of the future. I’m not saying that it will be, but that it could be. More and more college teams are running that style of offense and you’re going to have to be prepared to play it.

“We are going to play it again next year. We are playing [every team in] the NFC West and we play it twice in our division. It’s something that we want to make sure that we have a very good understanding of.”

Actually the team that runs it qb will get killed. It won't last long because the qbs won't last long and they are too valuable to risk that way.

I agree. Keep letting the LB get a free smack on that guy, and he'll start to crumble early in his career. If you back up, try to pass, and see a running lane, that's totally different.

So much for the Tampa 4-3 not requiring great cover corners.

Yea.

The read option is 100% based on numbers. If there are 8 in the box, it won't work consistently. But, if a team has WRs that can get open and keep that extra safety deep, it will be super effective.

IMO, the read option isn't that different than any other offense. It still requires the ability to have balance between the run and the pass, a line that effectively blocks, and a QB who makes good decisions.

THAT was the problem...teams that understood that smacked the QB...teams like us spun around in the middle of the room like a blindfolded kid at a birthday party trying to hit a pinata....and instead of smaking someone...we smacked no one. Then we complained about how hard it was because practicing against Kyle Orton was not the same as going against RG3 in a real game!
