If the coaches coach scared, the team will play scared....this is what I have noticed this year.
It goes back to the beginning of the year where you saw screen after screen...short pass after short pass....due to the coaching staff being overly concerned and throwing up the white flag when it came to the o-line.
This past week was really no different as there were 17 of 32 pass plays that were screen/swing passes.
Is the o-line a problem? Yep, and they knew if from the beginning and did nothing about it. Alex Barron isn't depth....he's a penalty machine...nothing more. There's an o-lineman sitting at home in New England that won't apologize, so he's sitting out...he can be had. But the GM won't make a move.
You'll never hear that the coaching staff is playing scared, but the players aren't idiots....they see what is being called and they can put two and two together.
When I look at the play-by-play from week one and yesterday, one word out weighs all others...that word is "Short". As in "T. Romo pass short....." I don't even feel like adding them all up from just those two games.
Is our o-line a problem? Yep. Something should have been done in years past as I have been clamoring for, but it hasn't. We are now seeing just how important these guys are and why the line is the most important part of the game. It's a TEAM sport not a STAR sport. The best "stars" will look like JAG's without protection.
But I just have a feeling that we are playing TOO scared and not getting plays in that stretch the defense.
Now, the good thing about all of this is that we are still beating teams in just about every category except where it matters most....the scoreboard.
Even coaching/playing scared we should still be winning.
This team can beat ANY team....but the sad thing right now is that they are beating themselves....yep, they are included in that "any".
I'd like to see us play a "little" less scared.....maybe that will get us some wins.
Don't get me wrong, at this point, we probably "need" to play with "concern" over our o-line situation, but let's not let it hamper us to the point it is.
Let's not concede the battle in the trenches before the game begins....or even after the first series.
What did Jared Allen say again? "We knew that we could get to the quarterback," Allen said. "Even though we didn't get any sacks, he was getting rid of the ball. You saw them change their game plan literally in the first series after we hit him about three or four times. All of a sudden it was screens, outlet passes, swing passes."
