Coach Tom Landry

Passed away 21 years ago on February 12th,
I know this thread is 2 days too late but still worth honoring the man and discussing his legacy.

I love the way he didn't show up for his Ring of Honor ceremony. I wonder if Jimmy shows up for his.

I recall it was on a Saturday. Living in Metro Atlanta, I turned on the 11pm news. When Landry's passing was covered, the news anchor stated that earlier that afternoon\evening Tony Dorsett was in town as part of an HBCU awards program I believe. A reporter covering the event was informed by his station about Landry. When interviewing Dorsett, the reporter told Dorsett about the sad news. Tony was so stunned. He tried to talk about how great a coach and a man Landry was- but he so overcome with emotion that he was just uttering partial statements and thoughts. It was a very sad thing to watch.

If you knew him i can only imagine some of the stuff he said. Absolutely could not go on this site.

I apparently didn't watch that halftime. I just remember he originally didn't want to show.

Grew up 30 miles from his and my mom's hometown. Got to coach in Tom Landry stadium....5-0 record there. Love that place.

I appreciated it a lot more than they did. He was one of my idols and most of them didn't know who he was.

Not enough men like Tom Landry today. The men who fought in WWII had a toughness that is hard to imagine. The contradiction of Tom Landy is he was as stoic as could be, but also a very innovative guy. Of all the coaches of his era, he was my favorite, including Lombardi.

When i found out he was from little old Mission, Texas i couldn't believe it. Someone from that little town, at the time, coaching the Dallas Freaking Cowboys. The man was just a class act. Tom Landry Stadium, home of the Mission Eagles. RIP Coach Landry.

BTW, i love those numbers on the unis.

Still have a photo of Coach Landry hanging in my office. He and Staubach are why this kid from Ohio grew up a Cowboys fan.

I’ve always wished the helmets looked like that, with chrome/silvery look instead of grey. Coach and my brother share the same birthday, sadly, 9/11.
