An update on coaching rumors and changes across college football:
Michigan
All is quiet on the Michigan coaching front, which means one thing: LSU's Les Miles is in the crosshairs.
"I would be shocked if he doesn't go," an SEC head coach tells me.
And time and again, I'm told few in Baton Rouge would shed tears if Miles ends up in Ann Arbor -- despite him adamantly pledging his allegiance to LSU and signing a new deal with the school. The LSU brass just doesn't want Miles ruining the Tigers' run to the national title.
Win or lose against Ohio State in the BCS championship game, it looks more and more likely that Miles will be named Michigan's coach. If that happens, LSU will become the hottest opening in America. I think the Tigers will make a run at Atlanta Falcons coach Bobby Petrino.
Arkansas
Many factions at the university are involved in the hiring, and that's bogging down the process, I'm told by someone familiar with the situation.
But it's growing more apparent that Arkansas may end up having to tab a coordinator instead of a proven head coach.
A source close to Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp tells me he has been contacted by Arkansas. And I expect the Hogs to talk to Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables, who has connections to Arkansas AD Jeff Long.
As I reported earlier, interim head coach/defensive coordinator Reggie Herring interviewed on Monday.
I also was told TCU coach Gary Patterson may be in the mix. I have been unable to confirm any interest in East Carolina coach Skip Holtz, but he also seems like a sensible fit.
A source told me Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin was interested in coaching the Hogs, but Al Davis squelched any overtures by jacking up Kiffin's buyout.
Tulsa offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn -- a good friend of an Arkansas booster -- has interviewed, as has Michigan defensive coordinator Ron English. Both are long shots.
