Coaching During the Game?

How much situational coaching do NFL coaches get to do while the game is in progress? How much of this is it reasonable for them to do?

For example, did our coaches tell the defense before the final Detroit drive that if they recovered a fumble they need to go down or is it expected players already understand these nuances?

I would hope in that situation it goes without saying what you should do if you recover a turnover.

Sometimes common sense has to prevail. Lawrence made a boneheaded move when trying to run with that fumble. He redeemed himself, but you can't coach stupid. Even Jimmy Johnson said this in his Football Life episode.

Well, apparently it didn't. What about the roughing the kicker call? Does someone tell the return team, "Hey, the last thing we need here is a roughing penalty."

You don't need to coach for something that any player with two firing neurons knows what to do. The kid made a mistake he won't make again....probably.

I think the coaches should have way pregame gotten everyone ready to counter those blitzes. And I blame a slew of coaches over it including Garrett, the OL coaches, Wilson, Linehan and even Marinelli who should have warned Garrett about the probabilities of that happening. In fact I'm kind of pissed about it.

You would think it's said over and over. But it's taught at an early age, at least by my coach it was. Lawrence was over excited. He made a great play and didn't think to end it there.

:D

Maybe not, but apparently you can draft stupid.

Jimmy was talking to Belichick in his Football Life episode and he mentioned his apprehension with trading for Charles Haley at first. He was told the guy was uncoachable and dumb. Then people told him that Haley was actually smart, but had a weird personality.

He refused to have dumb players on his team. I hope Garrett listened because he supposedly had the same conversation with Jimmy.

They do have calls for game situations.

Mincey was on Sirius this morning and they asked him about Detroit trying to draw them offsides on the 4th and 2. Mincey said they were calling out a play at the line. I don't remember the call but it had the number 80 in it. It was basically a defensive call that is to not go offsides.

Yes, especially since that has been about the only demonstrable way teams have been able to stop this offense. Horrible prep, great adjustment.

Well, let's just not do that again. You do have to give fair credit to Det whose defense is even better than I thought. Give me Suh and two of those LBers and I could do some damage with our guys.

You can't anticipate and remind for every situation. In general, big guys are told to fall on the ball regardless

If it was possible to anticipate and counter every possible blitz, no one would ever blitz.

I saw a show on this a few years ago. Situational football is pounded in during training camp. They even have sessions going over what to do in certain situations. The common sense plays are learned at a young age and by the time they make it to the NFL, most should know what to do instinctively. Once the season starts, it is rarely mentioned again unless a certain play happened and they need to go over it again.

Now, there are in-game calls when a particular scenario unfolds but I don't know what that is comprised of exactly.
