I think discipline is the problem. And that is Wade Phillips.
However, the coaching versus talent argument has been around since this board was at another location. I have always maintained that coaching is not the panecea some make it out to be. The talent is the yardstck by which we can judge a team.
The rebuttal has always been a who's who of great coaches and look at what they accomplished.
But if coaching is such a be-all end-all, then why aren't the seond teamers great?
I am being a little facetious about that, but there is a germ of truth there.
I have long maintained that we never truly will know how good a head coach Dave Campo would have been had he had a team that didn't have an Aikman who was a shell of bhis former self and an aging Emmitt and the rest of those guys that went 5-11.
Now this is not saying Campo was greatness. I have never maintained that position. Fact is I think he and Wade habve a lot in common about discipline. But the difference in 5-11 and 13-3 comes down to talent in most cases.
Or why is it that Joe Gibbs couldn't pull it together in Washington?
But if you take so-so talent and then grade out a coach because they cannot win, and label the coach a loser, is that the whole story?
This team today lacks discipline. The penalties say so. The lack of enthusiasm by most of the players say so. That is Wade Phillips problem because he sets that pace.
But this team has the raw talent to win. Does it have the inner fortitude to do so? That remains to be seen.
