Coaching Philosophy

I agree....walk around coach is a term that many don't understand. They think he just walks around...lol
During practice, I used to "walk around" watch drills and get in there and do a little teaching, encouraging and correcting....got to get your hands dirty..players need to know that you're involved and they need to trust you.
I would tell my staff...I'm gonna rip the coordinator in front of his staff, if he's doing his job, his staff will feel bad that I ripped him and they'll work harder for their coordinator...the coordinator rips the position coaches in front of their players, if he's doing his job, the players will work harder, because they let their coach down....that was my philosophy, I didn't learn it anywhere, but apparently people liked it, because I'm asked to speak at coaches clinics about the "football psychology " young coaches eat it up.....so much involved, and most have their own way. The best way, is the way that works for you. If you don't believe, you don't belong!!!! 1,2,3, BREAK!!!!!!
Put me in coach!! I'm ready!!

I don't think Schotty is a good HC. I've always been a never Schotty, who never thought he should've gotten hired. I also not one who thinks that the Head Coach should be the play caller either, unless he has shown he can handle both. That's more of a modern trend that I've never been a fan of. I'm not going to agree that the HC/Play Caller should micromanage a quarterback either. That sort of reminds me how the US military was different from many of the other militaries during that war, and even today. I mean in Ukraine for example, you had russians generals too close to the troops because they don't have Sargents commanding troops, which is kind of like what a quarterback should be.

Anyway, ultimately, yes, shoddy sucks and should be fired. Hard for me to blame a puppet. The quarterback still should be an on the field commander of his troops. Do we have anyone on Defense who is a leader? If we somehow do make it to the Playoffs because the NFC Least has four bad teams this year, I don't see us going anywhere. Of course I'll talk myself into thinking we can win gametime, like I always do, but being honest here.
It’s not completely new….Tom Landry did it. In fact, he might be the first to have done so. Which is noteworthy because he was a defensive coach before the Cowboys. But a good coach is a good coach. Which brings me to Shotty….

He may be a decent OC, but that is debatable. He may be a good HC, but that is highly debatable. Putting 2 debatables together isn’t synergistic - it’s the antithesis of synergy.

I'm glad you brought this up because it feels like there's a total lack of a cohesive game plan right now. It honestly looks like the coordinators are just doing whatever they want, and nobody is stepping up to rein them in or take control of the game flow.
When the defense is totally confused or gassed, and the offense immediately goes out and throws three straight incompletions to stop the clock, that’s a massive failure at the top. The coordinators are always going to have tunnel vision because they're trapped in their own playbooks. That's why the HC exists—to look at the bigger picture and manage the actual game.
If the HC isn't overriding a bad situational call, or forcing the offense to help out a struggling defense, then what is he actually doing on the sideline? It’s not undermining your staff to tell them, "Hey, we're changing the approach for this drive because the game is getting away from us." It's literally the job description. You're completely right; he needs to have his pulse on every single play, because right now it looks like nobody is steering the ship.
That's also part of the problem when Jerry gets a former coordinator and keeps the rest of the coaching staff intact. Like someone can start off a coordinator and make the jump to head coach. But then they have their own philosophies and should pick people that match their philosophy of coaching, like a Defensive coordinator that runs a similar defense that they are used to and so on. I mean you look at some of the great coaching trees of the NFL that produced more than one great successful Head Coach from them.

Coordinators learn to become head coaches from the head coach. Coaches take some of their assistants with them when they get a new job. Here Jerry has his guys in place and then he puts in a new head coach that is used to being a completely different system from the guys already here, and he really can't make any changes because he is being micromanaged by Jerry.

This team has no identity.

It hasnt for years

No HC can put their fingerprints on this team because of the GM and Owner.

Coach you have NEVER (correct me if im wrong) had to deal with for example a teacher, or administrator that undermines your authority.

Schotty stood no chance here, just like MM didnt and countless coaches before them.

Schotty wasnt even a good OC, so to get back to your original point, thinking he can manage an offense and the duties of a HC was insane to begin with.
MM did that to himself though. He let himself be made into a puppet, whereas Parcels didn't. I remember both me and Die Hard each separately where glad to hear he was coming in but telling people to be cautious, because he may become another puppet in the system. A Super Bowl winning coach should've put their foot down and if need be turn down the Job, instead of letting themself become a puppet here.

Perfectly said.

I go back to the call against ravens, many argued Dak should have just done it himself...and made a different call and throw it to pickens....

But to me a HC is like CEO of the company. If every VP started to do their own thing, there will be chaos, lack of cohesiveness, and not everyone on same page pulling same direction.
.you just described that, the HC has overall view. Feel and he needs to manage the little intricacies to ensure the whole team is playing well as a group.

And please next time PARAGRAPH is your best friend
And if you go back to what schotty said, you can tell in the language that he was taking the heat off of dak saying that perhaps he over coached Dak. The NFL is different from lower tiers of football. Most quarterbacks don't get micromanaged like that unless they are a backup that isn't trusted. We pointed out to you, that if Schotty didn't trust dak in the Ravens game, then that is even worse for both of them than Schotty covering them. Either Dak is a good quarterback you can trust and shouldn't get micromanaged, which I think he is. Or Dak is like those backups that the Headcoach doesn't fully trust and should have to listen what to do on that play. That is why people didn't buy it.

It's also another set of Eyes. An offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator can get caught up in their own thing, having a bout of tunnel vision. The head coach can hear the call they make and change it or tell them he wants a different call. I remember Jimmy telling Norv Turner that he didn't like a specific play one time and it got changed. Having an extra set of eyes is a good thing. Also it helps the Coordinators learn and become better themselves. Like if Jimmy was here and Jason Garrett called a pass when we should be running in that situation, he could've change the play and Garrett could've learned not to be so pass heavy when he was doing the OC job. If the head coach is being the OC, who is there to tell him he is getting too pass heavy?

Yeah, why I said unless they prove themselves that they can multitask the job. Schotty is a first time HC and far from rep of being one of the greats. Andy Reid calls plays, I knew he was a good Head Coach when he was on the egals.

Well, yes and no. Reid uses a collaborative effort, w/ input from several including OC Bieniemy.

Hear me out for a bit....in my experience, a HC is ultimately responsible for the team's performance....win or lose. So, when I say that Schotty needs to have his pulse on every play and every situation, some either disagree or misunderstand me. Let me explain....as a HC, you are responsible for the flow of the game....what I mean by this is, if our defense is coming off the field, tired, beaten, confused, they need time to rest and adjust....meet with the DC and position coaches. In the meantime, an OC isn't worried about that...what's to stop them from going out, three straight incomplete passes, punt and put the defense right back on the field? The HC is! An OC is on the 1 yard line and wants to dropback and throw a deep pass, risking a safety, what's to stop him from doing that? The HC is! A DC, wants to blow a TO to talk to his players because the OC went three and out....what's to stop him from blowing a TO that we made need later? The HC! Clock management, who is in charge of that, because the coordinators are to busy calling the game? The HC! Substitution, tired or banged up player needs to come out....who is in charge of that? The HC! Telling the ST coordinator, squib kick it and take a few seconds off the clock, so they don't get good field position and have time for a pass, TO and FG to win the game? The HC is! Who tells the QB, if he's open in the corner of the end zone, throw it to him for the win, if he's covered like a blanket, throw it away! The HC is! Some see it as micromanaging, it is...but, if done correctly and without undermining his staff in front of his players, it's a must...at least in my eyes. It's also a lot of fun! Even the 90 hour work weeks.
Now, that said, who thinks Schotty is doing all of these things, or who thinks he should?

Go Cowboys!

The coach certainly sets the tome, manages the game and is ultimately responsible for the team's performance on game day. I have always felt that Head coaches in football, managers in baseball, or coaches in any sports, can do more harm than good. Their job is to prepare the team for the game, make sure there is a solid game plan, and prepare the team to execute the plan. Then, when the game starts it is his job to make sure his players stay on track or to change the plan as necessary if the original plan isn't working. The best generals anticipate how the enemy will respond to his attack or defense. The have a plan B to counter any counters the enemy may make. In short, I agree Schotty is not doing what is necessary to put his team in teh best position to win, and he is not ensuring Parker does as well.

Verily, but didn’t Reid call plays when he was a 1st time HC with the Eagles? But, he had been a successful OC immediately prior. it really boils down to the individual and circumstances.

Shotty wasn’t calling plays under McCarthy. So so he goes from not calling plays to calling plays AND being a HC. Add in the Jones instilled culture and devaluing of a HC and Shotty has no chance.

It won’t happen, but I’m ready to move on from him after the year is done. But I also have no illusions that the next “HC” will be any better.

Thats what baffles me.

2024 defense was bad. I thought it will get better, but 2025 we were 6th all time worst, and thought they made changes, added some pieces, I was hopeful but this defense isn't any better than last year and we haven't played any good offenses yet. Giants, Tampa, washington even the ravens offense is not that good. And Houston offense struggling this year. And each of them have had their way with us.

Its about to really get bad for this defense and a players only meeting ain't the answer

That’s scary that better offenses are coming to a theater near you rated R adults only ! Yikes

Me neither. That's why I like to joke about people thinking the next puppet will be better than the last puppet. We won't have a good HC until Jerry or Stephen get desperate enough to do another Parcels type hire. My hopes on that aren't high.

Being that our HC is basically our OC too and also calling plays Id say he probably isn’t as involved during game in all aspects as described here.

Or the coach is an idiot.

So far that has a higher probability than anything else.

Blah, blah, blah...all this bull about what a coach should do. Well, what about the Greek dancing, paint balls, huh? Crying with the players, fake culture, all that, huh? Yeah, you left out all the important stuff he brings to the team. Begging Dak to like him. And you think he might not be a good HC?

As Aikman would say, "Get real".
