Cobie Durant contract details

Why do the Cowboys keep handing out bargain deals to their players? It always feels like they’re clearing cap space for a blockbuster superstar signing that never actually comes.

Just pay the guy what he’s worth. We’re fortunate he even wants to play for us, given the perception that the Cowboys are cheap.

I dunno. I think it is better than overpaying myself. In 15 years not one team in the top 5 biggest spenders in free agency has ever made a Super Bowl. We made matching offers to players this year that chose other teams. If we raised that price we most definitely be overpaying. Most players that are elite are generally retained by teams. Free agency is generally older players on higher contracts that are always a high risk due to age. Building a team through the draft is the right choice. Problem is our drafting hasn't been as great lately unfortunately. Especially on defense.

I think you are always over-paying to some degree in free agency. It's one reason why Stephen and Jerry don't particularly like it. They don't have a lot of leverage. You pay it or you don't...and if you don't, some other team will.

That’s a really cheap contract compared to the talent.
If this is any example of our other contract offers, I can see why we are losing out on other players.
It is prudent to get the best deal in this case. What he did with the Rams is no guarantee when it comes to the Cowboys.

I agree but I do give them credit for making same or little better contract offers to those that turned them down. This is better than years past when you heard we weren't even interested or gave any offers. This year they tried but didn't work out. Don't think anyone be happy if we had made Quay Walker or Nakobe Dean the highest paid linebackers in the league. They are good enough to deserve the 8th and 10th highest contracts like they currently are but not highest in the league. That IMO is overpaying too much.

What the current "over and under" for him making the 4 mil rather than the 5?

I think the fact that he signed tells you that's what he's worth.

If the market was a lot hotter for him, he wouldn't have signed this.

he is clearly hoping to play well and get a real deal next year
