An offensive line doesn't necessarily have to be manned by elite players. The Cowboy's offensive line of the early 90's had their stars to be sure but the biggest key was that they played and practiced together constantly.

In other words, they stayed incredibly healthy and there was very little disruption to their routine as a squad. Consequently, they practically knew what each other was thinking.

Williams, Gesek, Stepnoski, Newton and Tuinei

The dominant offensive line of the Cowboys was originally composed of two #3 draft picks, two undrafted free agents, and a former 10th round pick of the Raiders. One of the free agents was a former DT. He even has a recorded NFL sack.

The most important part of their emergence was that they hardly missed any games. In the first SB season, the 92 Cowboys offensive line missed a total of 4 regular season games between the five of them.

In 1993 their 2nd Super Bowl season, four out of five O-linemen played in every game.Stepnoski missed the last three games. Gesek was switched to center and Kevin Gogan, a 7 year Cowboys veteran, replaced him at left Guard.

In 1994 Erik Williams was badly injured in a car accident and he was replaced by a rookie, Larry Allen. Other than that, Stepnoski missed one game. The other three,, Newton, Tuinei and now Derrick Kennard played in all 16 games,

In 1995, their 3rd Super Bowl season, Stepnoski left and was replaced by Ray Donaldson. Erik Williams retuned at RT and Larry Allen was switched to RG. Donaldson missed 4 games and was replaced by Kennard. Other than that, Williams missed one game. That season four of the five Cowboys starting O-linemen made the Pro Bowl.

The Great Wall of Dallas dominated those years because they were almost always on the field together. An offensive line exemplifies the concept of teamwork in the NFL. They are successful when they are used to each other's movement. They are so in sync that they almost instinctively know how the other four are going to react to a certain situation.

This season Cowboys missed a total of 21 starts due to injury, suspension, and demotion. that was just too many changes along the O-line that prevented them from working together as an effective unit. . Consequently, Dak was less secure in the pocket, there were assignment breakdowns and it was partially responsible for all those O-line penalties

Cohesion and continuity is the key to a dominant O-line and a dominant O-line is the key to advancing in the playoffs.

One of the 49ers tackles was hurt in their 8th game and out for the season. He was replaced by a veteran in his 9th season. Other than that, the other four missed a combined one game between them

The Rams O-line missed a total of 5 starts.

The Chiefs made one change in the middle of the season due to injury. The other four O-linemen missed a combined one game.

The Dallas Cowboys must choose their O-line starters next season and stick with them. They must consider their health histories when they make their choices. It doesn't have to be the top drafted players, they do have to be guys that will show up every day.

My biggest concerns were and still are that I'm not sure when the exact run blocking or run success stopped and exactly why.

If comparing the Chiefs their o line has "only" been together since the 2021 offseason as theirs was an entire changing of their starting line from 2020. Their continuity/cohesion has been a constantly improving work in progress but only started THIS year as these are all 5 new starters from last year's team.

Yep, their whole o line was replaced from last year to THIS.

Hard to fathom Dallas being able to accomplish that but I digress back to the spirit of the OP now so as not to hijack this thread, lol

Exactly. This line was at its best when it had the same cast of characters. Then we sat Steele for Collins and put Connor on the bench and it all fell apart.

Collins is a better talent than Steele. But we played better with Steele.

We don't need all pros at every position on the OL. We need strategy, teamwork, consistency. You know, the stuff coaches are responsible for

Design too. 49ers pulling and sweeping. We just motion a wr to crack down and block str8 up
They pull and sweep because they have O-linemen capable of doing that. I can't help noticing that one of the major flaws of this Cowboys line is that they lack mobility. I don's think Williams pulls well at all. Biadasz seems limited as well. Even Martin seems to have lost some speed. The one word that describes La'el is "inconsistent" and right now the best single word description for Tyron is "undependable"

The Cowboys need to concentrate on acquiring O-linemen through the draft with almost the same intensity as they treated the defense in last year's draft, Half of their picks need to be O-linemen or TE's.

The Cowboys need to get a big physical TE. Schultz is a half-TE. The offense is designed towards using the TE in the passing game but they need a guy that can also be a great blocker. They don't grow on trees but find them no matter where they grow. They must improve in the TE position.

With the right TE, the position could serve as a safety valve for Dak in the same way that Witten did for Romo and Novacek did for Aikman.

We need to fire the Oline coach. Get rid of Williams and the center. Not rocket science here.

It's all about a good offensive scheme and identity to commit to the run. If we're being honest, the 49ers really didn't run the ball THAT well against the Cowboys and Packers. Outside of Deebo's runs, Elijah Mitchell averaged 3.6 yards against Dallas and they only averaged 3.7 against GB. But because Shanahan has created that identity for their offense, they will pound away and do enough to force manageable 3rd downs to move the chains.

Since Kellen took over as OC, the running game hasn't been as good. They throw more, run less, and have a shorter Time of Possession. I don't think it will simply be a matter of upgrading OL talent...the OC and offensive scheme is just not tailored for the run right now.
