Cole Beasley Signing Was a Top Priority for Dallas Cowboys

The first players the Dallas Cowboys signed to free-agent deals this offseason were Ronald Leary and Cole Beasley; not exactly the headlining news people in Dallas were expecting. In a year where players like Dez Byrant and Demarco Murray are looking for long-term deals, one would expect them to be their top priority, but without players like Leary and Beasley around, their impact on the team would be drastically reduced.
Signing Leary helps to keep the continuity the Cowboys have built on their dominant offensive line over the years, and once the Cowboys decide between keeping either Doug Free or Jermey Parnell, they should be set there. So if the Cowboys are able to bring Murray back, he will still have large holes to run through to help keep him among the league’s best at the running back position.
But the signing that will fly under most people’s radar is ironically the one that was a top priority for Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys’ brass. Don’t get me wrong, this team is nowhere close to being a Super Bowl contender without the likes of Bryant or Murray, but the importance of having a threat in the slot receiver spot cannot be overstated. Beasley is the perfect fit for this role because of his size and shiftiness; and due to Tony Romo’s comfort level with him, he poses yet another threat to defenses when they have to game plan for the Cowboys’ offense on Sundays.
Teams have to dedicate a player to defending him when that player would normally be focused on double-teaming Bryant, or attempting to stop Murray from breaking into the second level of the defense. Beasley’s speed allows him to get open and make key third-down receptions to help keep drives alive; and if given enough space, he has the ability to take it to the house once he’s in the open field.
The Cowboys have had other candidates try out for this role over the years, but their production has been spotty at best. In Beasley, it looks like they have finally found what they are looking for and you can only expect his production to increase as he gets more and more comfortable in the offense.
