How can this be official? I don't see any asterisks in the thread title. ;)

Now only if Escobar can do the same.

With the emergence of Beasley Escobar won't be seeing the field very much. Hardly saw him on the field today. He comes in for a play then he's back on the sidelines. Just another wasted 2nd rd pick.

I agree. I saw more from Streets and Harris also.

I truly hope we don't have to hear this every week the backup TE is not featured predominantly in our offense.

And to think, Tony threw a lousy pass to him when he was open...near the Red Zone.

The Cowboys used a 2nd round pick on a backup player who rarely sees a pass come his way because Beasley has emerged in the slot. When the Cowboys drafted Escobar in 2013 Beasley was coming off only a 15 catch 128 yard season. The Cowboys saw Escobar as a big target in the slot but Beasley's emergence has thrown a wrench into the plans the Cowboys had for Escobar. So far he's been a wasted pick for a mediocre team that can't afford to be throwing away 2nd round picks on backups. After Marty B's first 17 games as a Cowboys he had produced 11 more catches than Escobar for 162 more yards and 2 more TD's. Even Anthony Fasano who was drafted to block for Bledsoe had more receptions than Escobar after his first 17 games as a Cowboy.

Beasley is turning into a nice slot receiver who moves the chains and is developing some good chemistry with Romo. As long as Beasley is on the field Escobar will be on the sidelines. With all the talent the Cowboys have at receiver his role in the offense is going to be very limited as we continued to see in yesterdays game. It's going to take injuries to Beasley or Witten for Escobar to get an opportunity to be productive. Are you satisfied with what you've seen of Escobar so far and do you feel he was worthy of his 2nd round draft selection?

What I like about Cole is that we can call him 'Beastly' or 'Measley' depending on his production from week to week. Or refer to him simply as 'David Spade,' because of the awful haircut.

If he was a ginger we could call him Weasley.

It's Witten - and the fact that the coaching staff refuses to ever take him off the field - that is the reason Esco doesn't get more looks.

At this point, Esco is simply a better vertical threat. We don't need to feature Witten in the pass game. On those shotgun snaps where Witten splits out, that should be Esco.

Because of their skillsets, Esco and Beasley should compliment each other really well.

I don't mention Escobar every week I only bring him up when others mention him and give my opinion. If he continues not to produce and the Cowboys keep losing games his name will continue to come up because the team invested a premium pick on him. If Beasley is mentioned Escobar will be mentioned because they both play the slot. When one player is on the field the other won't be. What sense does it make for an 8-8 team that's missed the playoffs the last 4 years to invest a 2nd round pick on a backup TE when that team has more holes than Bonnie and Clydes death car?

Be honest are you satisfied with the role Escobar has and do you think he was the best choice the Cowboys could have made with that 2nd round pick in 2013? It's picking backups at a spot where most teams are looking for starters that have helped cause the Cowboys to spin their wheels every season.

I think it's too soon to tell for this season. I was satisfied with his role last year, yeah. He's on the roster because the team believes he gives us a matchup advantage in the 12 sets. That's fine with me. I like the player and I think he's a draft pick we hit on.

I did think we overdrafted a TE at that position. And I think we did so previously with the other two second round TEs and with Felix Jones in the first. That's mostly water under the bridge now, but I'd rather the premium picks be spent at premium positions and we take our chances developing players later in the draft at TE. But that doesn't mean I don't understand that the team felt differently, and it doesn't mean that I don't like the player or think he's a waste of a pick and say so in every thread where the slot WR is mentioned.

No, it's Beasley that's keeping Escobar off the field because Escobar was drafted to play the slot not replace Witten. The only way Escobar will get a good opportunity in the passing game is if Beasley or Witten gets hurt. The Cowboys keep repeating the same mistake every few seasons with 2nd round TE's. They have a plan with these TE's that look good on paper but they can never make it work on the field. All they're doing are developing these TE's to produce for other teams a few years later. With Beasley's emergence the only role where Escobar could make a impact would be as an endzone threat.

Why he was drafted isn't really the point. He and Beasley are nothing alike so at this point it's Witten he's behind. Esco is a vertical, receiving TE. He has physical tools that Witten doesn't. Why they won't give him a shot in the passing game is beyond me.

I can already tell he'll never live up to his 2nd round draft status because the team has too much talent at receiver. Beasley is taking over the slot and unless the Cowboys decide to move on from Witten who didn't do much yesterday Escobar will never be productive. Catching 10-20 balls a season isn't going to going to earn him a second contract with the team unless he's putting up 8+ TD's with those catches. An endzone target is Escobar's best chance of finding a productive role in the offense. He's a big, tall target who creates matchup problems. I argued that Marty B would never pan out and you were in some of those threads that got out of hand.

Everyone who was throwing rocks at me said I was wrong about Marty B but they ended up being wrong. Some thought Marty B would be another Antonio Gates. lol All I heard from FANS was what a freakish talent he was. Every summer all we heard was what a big part of the passing game he would be and it never happened. I have nothing against Escobar but the Cowboys had no business using a premium pick in an area where they have talent. Hanna was drafted in the 5th round in 2012 and caught more balls than Escobar last season. The Cowboys could have traded down 13 spots and got Eddie Lacy who would have been a much better selection than Escobar. Lacy and Murray would have been a great one-two punch at RB.

Had the Cowboys expected Beasley to emerge the way he has in the slot I don't believe they would have drafted Escobar. Beasley is ideal for what teams are looking for in the slot he's a small, quick jitterbug who gets open and moves the chains. Teams have used big receivers in the slot Steve Mariucci used TO in the slot in SF. Escobar is a big lumbering target who can make plays down the field but the Cowboys have much better down the field threats than him who Romo trusts. Marty B was suppose to have the physical tools but it takes smarts and the ability to get open. Marty B had trouble knowing where to line up. Escobar has had some issues knowing where to be because last season they showed Romo screaming at him after a botched play.

I've never seen Romo tear into a player like that before and if Romo doesn't trust Escobar he's not going to look his way. Witten isn't a fast, athletic TE but he knows how to find soft spots and get open. He didn't do much yesterday and if the Cowboys season starts to go to pot and he continues not doing much maybe the team will give Escobar an opportunity in the passing game. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing Witten miss a game or two just to see what Escobar could do in a starting role.
