Colombo: Flo must stay!

Cowboys RT Marc Colombo's never been known for making outlandish statements. In fact, he doesn't say a lot publicly at all.

So when he says something, you listen. And his words were particularly strong this morning at the Michael Johnson Performance Center, when he was questioned on the importance of keeping prospective free agent and his bookend Flozell Adams on board.

"Show me a better tackle," Colombo said. "I think he’s the best pass blocking left tackle in all of football. I’m hoping they do (re-sign him), because he’s a good friend of mine and it keeps the offensive line together. He’s the only one now that’s free. If they can sign him, it’s huge."

There remains the option of slapping the franchise tag on him. The deadline for that is a week from today. The cost would be a one-year, $9 million tender.

"He’s an unbelievable left tackle and I think he had one of the best years he’s ever had here last year," Colombo added. "He has plenty of years left, and he goes out every week and shuts down unbelievable defensive ends. That’s all you can ask for in a left tackle."

Another benefit would be keeping the starting five intact. Continuity is crucial along the offensive line, with players' ability to work in concert with each other vital to the group's success as a whole.

"It’s invaluable," Colombo said. "It’s unbelievable to keep what you have and just be able to build on it. People leaving or signing somewhere else, it adds a different chemistry. I think we have the right mix and the right chemistry now to do some pretty good things."

Ideally, Colombo would like be part of that for more than just next year.
The two-year deal he signed last spring expires after 2008, so that's no certainty. But the best situation, he thinks, is the one he's already in.

"I’d like to have them put an investment in me for the future and I want to be around for, obviously, the new stadium," he said. "I feel like as an offensive line, we work really well together and I don’t want to be moving around again. I want to be here."

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hope this wasn't posted already, its almost a week old but I thought it was a goody. Interesting to hear Colombo's thoughts, wonder if Flozell has helped him progress throughout the last two seasons.

I agree with Colombo but hey players wanted FA they got it and this goes along with FA in that it forces teams to make some tough choices.

For every Flo you keep, you have to let someone walk in the future. We have MBIII, Canty, TNew and eventually Ware(can you imagine what that'll cost:eek: ) not to mention guys like Hamlin, Colombo and even TO to consider. Over the next 2 years we have to chose carefully!

Well if we sign Flo for one year, just enough time to let someone like Free or McQ develop, that shouldn't hurt us from signing those guys after this season.

Shocking fact (to me anyway) about our O-line and continuity. You have to go all the way back to the 1995 and 1996 seasons to find when the last time we started back to back seasons with the same 5 guys up front. From 1997 on we have had at least one change every year and 2002 was a total mess.

Since Colombo wants Flo so bad, maybe Colombo would agree to restructure his contact and give half of his money to Flo so he can stay.

I got a feeling Flo will be asking for a lot of dough.

That's what I was thinking.

If these guys want to keep a teammate then belly-up to the bar and be willing to take less of a contract.

Of course they want to keep their teammate AND get the highest contract they can get both for themselves and their other teammates...

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

Exactly. We need to look at the whole team and the future. We have already put quite a bit of money in the OL. Some of the former signings do not help the situation, Roy Willy comes to mind. Maybe he will rework his contract to help keep Flo. ;)

Flo will stay here if he really wants to. But I have the view, since this is his last contract, he will try to get all the money he can. So, bye-bye Flo.

If we let TO walk after 2008, the WR position will need a expensive replacement.

:welcome:

It's a tight line to walk. The decisions this off-season will be tough for sure. However, how far of a step backward are you willing to take on a team that has Super Bowl aspirations.

There's one thing for sure (atleast for this season), if Flo isn't re-signed we just got weaker at that position. That position just happens to be the blindside of our franchise QB.

True but the tough decisions have to be made. I believe Flo's price tag will be to high. I prefer to get younger and more mobile at that position. If needed, the LT can be given help in certain situations.

In the playoff game the OL disappeared in the second half and had Romo running for his life. Flo was a big part of that. In fact Romo's mobility save the OL quite a few sacks.
