You've been offered the chance to be a colonist on this new world. There are pluses and minuses. The big plus is you'll be making history. You'll be among the first humans to live on another planet in another solar system. This planet is a lot like the Earth. It has a breathable atmosphere and nearly the same gravity. They can tell that the planet has an abundance of plants that support human life, and it has continents and oceans much like the Earth. If you accept the offer, you'll live on an island near a big continent in a mild climate. It stays between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit year round. There's plenty of fresh water, fruits and vegetables. There are creatures similar to rabbits and other mammals that they believe are no threat to humans.

The downsides are you'll never be able to return to the Earth. The trip to the other planet will take about 120 years, most of which you'll spend in crio-sleep. When you wake up, you'll be close to the new planet. It will be possible to send video messages back to the Earth, but they'll be seen by humans whom you don't know since everyone you knew on Earth will be dead by the time you start your life on the new planet.

But it will be possible to send a message to Earth. It will take about 30 years to get there. If you're married, it will be possible to voyage there with your spouse and kids if you have them.

Anyone with real stones should jump at the chance. A new world? Talk about opportunity. Yeah basically never having anything from your family again would be a big turnoff to those from big close families but then no one is pointing a gun to their head, right?

Considering the condition of THIS world in all ways (not counting the phony global warming crap) anyone not wanting to go is basically a drone.

This world is amazing. I can't imagine being able to travel around it at will, and seeing everything I want to see.

Thoughts of traveling to another planet are vain imaginations.

Forget cryosleep. I need faster than light travel. Sign me up for environmentally enclosed colonies on Mars if that is not an option. Hopefully Arnold Schwarzenegger will have activated the ancient Martian oxygen atmosphere producing machines by the time I arrive.

There are just too many variables. Okay. What if I go there and tall blue aliens are sabotaging mining operations? I catch one of them in the act and yell, "I SEE YOU!" They turn around and scream back, "I SEE YOU!" I SEE YOU! NO! I SEE YOU! Then a revolution breaks out.

My luck is bad. Some friends talk me into visiting a nearby cave. We go inside and there are huge pods sticking out of the ground. One of them opens up, something jumps out, hugs my face and lays eggs. Next time you know, a creature pops out of my chest singing, "Hello my baby! Hello my darling! Hello my ragtime gal!"

Worse yet, we are all traveling in suspended animation. Who's to say some aliens capture the ship, wake us up and some heavy breathing guy in a mask starts accusing me of being some sort of traitor of some kind of rebel alliance?

I would gladly go to Mars if I could return back to earth but I would not want to go to a planet too far to return to earth. Pioneering on a distant planet has a 1 in a billion chance of survival. I'd move to the South side of Chicago before I would take a trip outside our solar system.

Correction: Since Alpha Centauri is only a little more than 4 light years away, it would only take 4 years for messages to reach Earth.

There will be 5,000 people per ship, and about 10 ships over 20 years going there. Plenty of highly skilled people, including mechanics, engineers, doctors, etc., are making the trip. The idea is to be able to begin an advanced society, not force people to live primitively.

All robots would belong to me and I'm the one person allowed to have guns. So if they wanted to kill me they'd have to fight through my robot army first.
