Paul, a construction worker who lived alone in the small Colorado town of Kremmling, received the tickets from family friends Tia Bakke, 24, and her boyfriend, Jay Yust, 30. The father and son had been out hunting earlier that Thursday morning. When they returned from the woods, the couple told them that they were going to see Denver host San Diego that night and asked them to come along because they have extra tickets.
For Jarod and Paul, It was an opportunity to attend their first Broncos game – two weeks before Jarod's 21st birthday.
That afternoon, Jay made the two-hour drive from Kremmling to Sports Authority Field in Denver in a white GMC truck. Paul, Jarod and Tia rode as passengers.
When they arrived, they split up because Jarod and Paul had seats in the south bleachers but their plan was for the four of them to meet at halftime at a concession area in between the two seats. When they met shortly before the second half kicked off, Jarod split up for a moment to use the restroom.
It was the last time Jarod would see his father.
Jarod stood in the line to use the men's room and could see the group up until he was about the fifth person from entering the actual bathroom. At that point, a wall had obstructed his view of them. He was gone no more than 15 minutes and then returned to the concession area. Jay and Tia were gone, as was Paul.
Tia said Paul didn't have a cell phone on him, but it's not something that Paul typically is known to have with him at all times.
"Paul’s not really about cell phones," Tia told the New York Daily News. "He knew he was going to be with his son who had a cell phone. He knew if anyone needed him, he’d be with his son."
"He had a few beers that night, she added. "But he was by no means intoxicated."
The last that she remembers, Paul said as halftime was ending, "we'll see you after the game."
"He does not like to be in the middle of the city," Jarod said on Monday. "If he was going to leave for any reason, he was going to make sure he had transportation."
When he didn't return to his seat, they notified stadium security and police. They stayed until midnight at the stadium, combing the area for any potential clues. Nothing.
"We called detox centers, hospitals, jails within a 15-mile radius and went to all the hospitals in person on Saturday," Jarod said.
Medical staff couldn't confirm any possible knowledge of the man due to patient privacy laws. They filed a missing persons report and have spent the last two days handing out flyers with his picture to people in the Denver area.
Now, detective T.J. Binet with the Denver Police Department is waiting on security footage from officials at Sports Authority Field in Denver to see where Paul may have gone while Jarod was in the bathroom. Sonny Jackson, the Public Information Officer with Denver police, talked about the case on Monday with the New York Daily News.
