This guy was playing out of position at Oregon. The Ducks should have played the former LB & RB like they did Dion Jordan, at LB on base downs then as a pass rusher on sure passing downs. Lyerla is 6'4 245 and runs a 4.5 40 (also has a vert of 39"), has great hands, huge catch radius and plays angry, very very angry.

Lyerla's crazy athleticism, size and aggressiveness could have been harnessed better than as a blocking TE. Cowboys need to take a chance on this misfit. The risk is minimal since there is no draft pick (or even guaranteed money) involved, only pure reward if this kid can make the transition.

Supposedly Lyerla has cleaned up his drug related problems. His high school coach said that Lyerla responds best to discipline (probably why LT and Parcells could co-exist with LT's coke habits) and structure. As a TE, Lyerla has been compard to Gronkowski and Delanie Walker. Lyerla is a special athlete, this is not debatable. Chip Kelly even called Lyerla the "best athlete in the country".

Whether as a TE or LB/DE, bring him in Jerry!! But with the caveat that Lyerla accept the "Dez Rules"!

No, because

No, because Dez never had a drug problem and never beat up his coach. But the talent is there.

I'll pass. He is a good athlete, though. Shame he threw away a career in the NFL.

Theres better prospects that have done more that won't get a chance. Missing games and quitin the team and gettin popped for the big C makes it sound like he's bringin his own monkey to the show.

Is Colt Lyerla Worth the Risk as an NFL Undrafted Free Agent?

In the not-too-distant past, former Oregon tight end Colt Lyerla was a potential first-round pick. Now, he's still waiting for a chance to latch on as a tryout player for one of the 32 NFL teams that passed on him time and again in the draft.

It's a bed he made, and now he's lying in it...waiting for the phone to ring.

Lyerla, only 21, is an absolute beast of a draft prospect at 6'4", 242 pounds. As a junior in high school, he provided one of the mostelectric plays in recent memory and was featured on SportsCenter. His team won a state championship, and he spurned offers from Nebraska, Miami, California, Oklahoma, Tennessee, USC, UCLA and more in favor of the Oregon Ducks—just a couple of hours away.

According to NFL.com, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.61 seconds—only one-hundredth of a second slower than first-round pick Eric Ebron (albeit at eight pounds lighter). He has a 39-inch vertical leap, which was tops among tight ends at this year's NFL combine by four inches.

I wouldn't have had a problem bringing him in. Sounds like he can play. Veterans should be able to handle it if he acts up. By any means necessary. Dallas is missing that nasty streak.

Which is it? Gronkowski and Walker are two very different tight ends in terms of size, style, speed and production.

Not showing up for practices and games in college then just quitting college all together so you can get busted for cocaine is a lil bit different than celebrating your 30th birthday party in a hotel room.

The Cowboys have made it clear that drug problems automatically exclude any player from being picked up by the team. They were burned in that regard by the bad choice they made to draft Quincy Carter. Since then, they have picked up some players with character concerns (even alcohol-related), but I don't believe one player caught using marijuana, coke, etc., has been brought in.

http://eugenedailynews.com/2013/03/...ts-controversial-sandy-hook-conspiracy-video/
Oregon Ducks tight end Colt Lyerla found himself in the spotlight after a controversial tweet on Thursday featuring a 30 minute Sandy Hook Elementary conspiracy video.

The video has close to 1.5 million views on YouTube. Whether or not you agree or disagree with the theory/theories, posting such controversial content is probably not the wisest move for the Oregon star.

Lyerla took it another step too far saying to one skeptical Twitter user saying, “The parents of the kids that supposedly died in the sandy hook situation are liars.” Lyerla deleted that tweet.
Maybe the drugs were doing the talking for the young man but I... I don't think he's completely right in the head...

But alcohol is a drug.

Scouts ripped Packers TE Colt Lyerla in lead-up to NFL draft

Undrafted free agents are signed and soon cut as a matter of routine in the NFL, but if the scouting community's assessment of Green Bay Packers rookie Colt Lyerla is on target, the former Oregon tight end's eventual flame-out is more a matter of time.

A sampling of scouting comments on Lyerla collected by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel prior to the NFL draft:

»"Wouldn't touch him. He's off our board."

»"He's the wild card in this whole thing. Extremely talented kid. Quit the team this year. Has had multiple off-the-field issues. Just a real nightmare in that regard. Is he going to be the Aaron Hernandez kind of player, a first-round talent that somebody gets in the fourth round? Colt quit. Aaron played. It's hard to justify all the quitting."

»"I wouldn't sign him. I wouldn't do that to my owner."
