Colts’ Polian calls new Pro Bowl setup ’stupid’

Colts president Bill Polian lashed out against the NFL’s new Pro Bowl setup, saying that playing the all-star game the week before the Super Bowl instead of the traditional week after is “stupid” and “a disruption” to his players.

Polian told Dan Dakich of 1070 the Fan in Indianapolis on Monday (via Sports Radio Interviews) that having the Pro Bowl before the Super Bowl will be an issue for the seven Colts who will be honored. The players were supposed to have the weekend off but instead will fly to South Florida on Saturday, eight days before they face the Saints in Super Bowl XLIV.

The seven Colts will not play in the Pro Bowl, but they must fully participate in pregame introductions and other festivities in order to earn a full player’s share.

“It’s stupid,” Polian said. “It’s a disruption, but we’ll deal with it.

“Well, we’ll come back to practice on Wednesday. We’ll practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. They’ll have off Saturday. If it weren’t for the Pro Bowl disruption, they would have the weekend off, but they can’t because we have to send those players to Miami to do Lord knows what. We’ll come back and practice on Sunday, and the Pro Bowl players will go and do whatever they have to do, and then the team will leave on Monday.”

Polian was unsure if the players would travel back to Indianapolis after the Pro Bowl, then go right back to South Florida with the team Monday.

“I think they plan to keep them down there that evening,” Polian said. “They haven’t even told us yet what this is all about. We don’t even have any details or anything like that. Maybe they will call us Friday and tell us.

“In any event, the fact of the matter is that we’re thinking that they’re down there Sunday night and they will meet us Monday, which is a hell of a thing, isn’t it? It sends a great message to all the young people out there and all the coaches that talk teamwork that you take your best seven players and split them up from your team at the ultimate moment in sports.”

Does Polian suspect old school fraternity hazing?

Does Polian fear that Peyton will be forced to play "pass the cherry?"

I think he wants his team and all his players getting ready for the SB not a trip to the Pro Bowl ceremonies.

I agree with Polian. If Goodell wants to move the Pro Bowl before the Super Bowl, then he should not force the SB players to participate in any PB activities......even if the fans voted those players in.

I kinda like the idea from Carucci. Get rid of the current format and just make it a Future Stars game. He says take guys in their first 3-4 years and have an age limit of 27....

I say make it Rookies vs Sophmores. This way, you go at most 2 times, and then you get new blood in every year. You give the youth of the game a lot of extra exposure and allow them to become more of a household name.

I also know that this will be highly unpopular, but I wish the SB was on Saturday at 6:00 pm. This way, people could party their tales off, and have all of Sunday to recover, before going to work. I personally feel the Monday after the SB should be a holiday, but since it isn't and I don't see it becoming one anytime soon, just move the SB to Saturday.

Not a bad ideal having the game Sat night instead of Sunday. I know I have called in uh um sick on Mondays after attending past Super Bowl Parties. :laugh2:

I agree. It is great for South Florida since they will be getting money in back to back weeks for the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl but it makes no sense holding the pro bowl the week ahead of the SB.

I agree that it's a stupid format but then again so does pretty much everyone else who enjoys NFL football. It was just a dumb move by the NFL.

Why is it a dumb move? They had to try something.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Well, it was broke. This may not fix it, but something had to be done.

What's broke about it? Whatever it is, it's probably not the day it has been regularly played.

It's dumb because I know if I'm in the Super Bowl, I have no real want to go run around and risk injury one week before for a 'scrimmage' type game.

league wasnt making money at it because no one watches it.....after SB football is done for most....while they have a whole empty week before SB to fill ...who cares if SB team players get to play in Pro Bowl....they probably dont want to anyway..especially if its not in Hawaii..i mean after all they get to play in SB...they dont care about the pro bowl game itself...they just want the pro bowler title on their resume for contract positioning and HOF consideration, and that they still get .........to me the problem is new locations..(same city as SB) ...i mean.....i think before players viewed it as a vacation and week of partying .....i dont think they will be all that excited to vacation in Arlington or Indy in 2011 and 2012 for the pro bowl...
